Mark 4:1-20

CEB 1 Jesus began to teach beside the lake again. Such a large crowd gathered that he climbed into a boat there on the lake. He sat in the boat while the whole crowd was nearby on the shore. NIV 1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. CEB 2 He said many things to them in parables. While teaching them, he said, NIV 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: CEB 3 "Listen to this! A farmer went out to scatter seed. NIV 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. CEB 4 As he was scattering seed, some fell on the path; and the birds came and ate it. NIV 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. CEB 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground where the soil was shallow. They sprouted immediately because the soil wasn't deep. NIV 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. CEB 6 When the sun came up, it scorched the plants; and they dried up because they had no roots. NIV 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. CEB 7 Other seed fell among thorny plants. The thorny plants grew and choked the seeds, and they produced nothing. NIV 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. CEB 8 Other seed fell into good soil and bore fruit. Upon growing and increasing, the seed produced in one case a yield of thirty to one, in another case a yield of sixty to one, and in another case a yield of one hundred to one." NIV 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” CEB 9 He said, "Whoever has ears to listen should pay attention!" NIV 9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” CEB 10 When they were alone, the people around Jesus, along with the Twelve, asked him about the parables. NIV 10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. CEB 11 He said to them, “The secret of God's kingdom has been given to you, but to those who are outside everything comes in parables. NIV 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables CEB 12 This is so that they can look and see but have no insight, and they can hear but not understand. Otherwise, they might turn their lives around and be forgiven. NIV 12 so that, “ ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’” CEB 13 "Don't you understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? NIV 13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? CEB 14 The farmer scatters the word. NIV 14 The farmer sows the word. CEB 15 This is the meaning of the seed that fell on the path: When the word is scattered and people hear it, right away Satan comes and steals the word that was planted in them. NIV 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. CEB 16 Here's the meaning of the seed that fell on rocky ground: When people hear the word, they immediately receive it joyfully. NIV 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. CEB 17 Because they have no roots, they last for only a little while. When they experience distress or abuse because of the word, they immediately fall away. NIV 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. CEB 18 Others are like the seed scattered among the thorny plants. These are the ones who have heard the word; NIV 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; CEB 19 but the worries of this life, the false appeal of wealth, and the desire for more things break in and choke the word, and it bears no fruit. NIV 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. CEB 20 The seed scattered on good soil are those who hear the word and embrace it. They bear fruit, in one case a yield of thirty to one, in another case sixty to one, and in another case one hundred to one." NIV 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
