Mark 4:2-20

NRS 2 He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: NIV 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: NRS 3 "Listen! A sower went out to sow. NIV 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. NRS 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. NIV 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. NRS 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. NIV 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. NRS 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away. NIV 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. NRS 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. NIV 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. NRS 8 Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold." NIV 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” NRS 9 And he said, "Let anyone with ears to hear listen!" NIV 9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” NRS 10 When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. NIV 10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. NRS 11 And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables; NIV 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables NRS 12 in order that "they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.' " NIV 12 so that, “ ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’” NRS 13 And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? NIV 13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? NRS 14 The sower sows the word. NIV 14 The farmer sows the word. NRS 15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. NIV 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. NRS 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. NIV 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. NRS 17 But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. NIV 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. NRS 18 And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, NIV 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; NRS 19 but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing. NIV 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. NRS 20 And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold." NIV 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
