Mark 6

BBE

GNT

1 And he went away from there, and came into his country; and his disciples went with him.
1 Jesus left that place and went back to his hometown, followed by his disciples.
2 And when the Sabbath day had come, he was teaching in the Synagogue; and a number of people hearing him were surprised, saying, From where did this man get these things? and, What is the wisdom given to this man, and what are these works of power done by his hands?
2 On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue. Many people were there; and when they heard him, they were all amazed. "Where did he get all this?" they asked. "What wisdom is this that has been given him? How does he perform miracles?
3 Is not this the woodworker, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were bitter against him.
3 Isn't he the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren't his sisters living here?" And so they rejected him.
4 And Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour, but in his country, and among his relations, and in his family.
4 Jesus said to them, "Prophets are respected everywhere except in their own hometown and by their relatives and their family."
5 And he was unable to do any work of power there, but only to put his hands on one or two persons who were ill, and make them well.
5 He was not able to perform any miracles there, except that he placed his hands on a few sick people and healed them.
6 And he was greatly surprised because they had no faith. And he went about the country places teaching.
6 He was greatly surprised, because the people did not have faith. Then Jesus went to the villages around there, teaching the people.
7 And he gave orders to the twelve, and sent them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits;
7 He called the twelve disciples together and sent them out two by two. He gave them authority over the evil spirits
8 And he said that they were to take nothing for their journey, but a stick only; no bread, no bag, no money in their pockets;
8 and ordered them, "Don't take anything with you on the trip except a walking stick - no bread, no beggar's bag, no money in your pockets.
9 They were to go with common shoes on their feet, and not to take two coats.
9 Wear sandals, but don't carry an extra shirt."
10 And he said to them, Wherever you go into a house, make that your resting-place till you go away.
10 He also told them, "Wherever you are welcomed, stay in the same house until you leave that place.
11 And whatever place will not take you in and will not give ear to you, when you go away, put off the dust from your feet as a witness against them.
11 If you come to a town where people do not welcome you or will not listen to you, leave it and shake the dust off your feet. That will be a warning to them!"
12 And they went out, preaching the need for a change of heart in men.
12 So they went out and preached that people should turn away from their sins.
13 And they sent out a number of evil spirits, and put oil on a great number who were ill, and made them well.
13 They drove out many demons, and rubbed olive oil on many sick people and healed them.
14 And king Herod had news of him, because his name was on the lips of all; and he said, John the Baptist has come back from the dead, and for this reason these powers are working in him.
14 Now King Herod heard about all this, because Jesus' reputation had spread everywhere. Some people were saying, "John the Baptist has come back to life! That is why he has this power to perform miracles."
15 But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, even like one of the prophets.
15 Others, however, said, "He is Elijah." Others said, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."
16 But Herod, when he had news of it, said, John, whom I put to death, has come back from the dead.
16 When Herod heard it, he said, "He is John the Baptist! I had his head cut off, but he has come back to life!"
17 For Herod himself had sent men out to take John and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had taken for himself.
17 Herod himself had ordered John's arrest, and he had him tied up and put in prison. Herod did this because of Herodias, whom he had married, even though she was the wife of his brother Philip.
18 For John said to Herod, It is wrong for you to have your brother's wife.
18 John the Baptist kept telling Herod, "It isn't right for you to marry your brother's wife!"
19 And Herodias was bitter against him, desiring to put him to death; but she was not able;
19 So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but she could not because of Herod.
20 For Herod was in fear of John, being conscious that he was an upright and holy man, and kept him safe. And hearing him, he was much troubled; and he gave ear to him gladly.
20 Herod was afraid of John because he knew that John was a good and holy man, and so he kept him safe. He liked to listen to him, even though he became greatly disturbed every time he heard him.
21 And the chance came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;
21 Finally Herodias got her chance. It was on Herod's birthday, when he gave a feast for all the top government officials, the military chiefs, and the leading citizens of Galilee.
22 And when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and did a dance, Herod and those who were at table with him were pleased with her; and the king said to the girl, Make a request for anything and I will give it you.
22 The daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod and his guests. So the king said to the girl, "What would you like to have? I will give you anything you want."
23 And he took an oath, saying to her, Whatever is your desire I will give it to you, even half of my kingdom.
23 With many vows he said to her, "I swear that I will give you anything you ask for, even as much as half my kingdom!"
24 And she went out and said to her mother, What is my request to be? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
24 So the girl went out and asked her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered.
25 And she came in quickly to the king, and said, My desire is that you give me straight away on a plate the head of John the Baptist.
25 The girl hurried back at once to the king and demanded, "I want you to give me here and now the head of John the Baptist on a plate!"
26 And the king was very sad; but because of his oaths, and those who were with him at table, he would not say 'No' to her.
26 This made the king very sad, but he could not refuse her because of the vows he had made in front of all his guests.
27 And straight away the king sent out one of his armed men, and gave him an order to come back with the head: and he went and took off John's head in prison,
27 So he sent off a guard at once with orders to bring John's head. The guard left, went to the prison, and cut John's head off;
28 And came back with the head on a plate, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.
28 then he brought it on a plate and gave it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.
29 And when his disciples had news of it, they came and took up his body, and put it in its last resting-place.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and got his body, and buried it.
30 And the twelve came together to Jesus; and they gave him an account of all the things they had done, and all they had been teaching.
30 The apostles returned and met with Jesus, and told him all they had done and taught.
31 And he said to them, Come away by yourselves to a quiet place, and take a rest for a time. Because there were a great number coming and going, and they had no time even for food.
31 There were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his disciples didn't even have time to eat. So he said to them, "Let us go off by ourselves to some place where we will be alone and you can rest a while."
32 And they went away in the boat to a waste place by themselves.
32 So they started out in a boat by themselves to a lonely place.
33 And the people saw them going, and a number of them, having knowledge who they were, went running there together on foot from all the towns, and got there before them.
33 Many people, however, saw them leave and knew at once who they were; so they went from all the towns and ran ahead by land and arrived at the place ahead of Jesus and his disciples.
34 And he got out, and saw a great mass of people, and he had pity on them, because they were like sheep without a keeper: and he gave them teaching about a number of things.
34 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw this large crowd, and his heart was filled with pity for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things.
35 And at the end of the day, his disciples came to him and said, This place is waste land, and it is late:
35 When it was getting late, his disciples came to him and said, "It is already very late, and this is a lonely place.
36 Send them away, so that they may go into the country and small towns round about, and get some food for themselves.
36 Send the people away, and let them go to the nearby farms and villages in order to buy themselves something to eat."
37 But he said to them in answer, Give them food yourselves. And they said to him, Are we to go and get bread for two hundred pence, and give it to them?
37 "You yourselves give them something to eat," Jesus answered. They asked, "Do you want us to go and spend two hundred silver coins on bread in order to feed them?"
38 And he said to them, How much bread have you? go and see. And when they had seen, they said, Five cakes of bread and two fishes.
38 So Jesus asked them, "How much bread do you have? Go and see." When they found out, they told him, "Five loaves and also two fish."
39 And he made them all be seated in groups on the green grass.
39 Jesus then told his disciples to make all the people divide into groups and sit down on the green grass.
40 And they were placed in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.
40 So the people sat down in rows, in groups of a hundred and groups of fifty.
41 And he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing over them; and when the cakes were broken, he gave them to the disciples to put before the people; and he made division of the two fishes among them all.
41 Then Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
42 And they all took of the food and had enough.
42 Everyone ate and had enough.
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken bits and of the fishes.
43 Then the disciples took up twelve baskets full of what was left of the bread and the fish.
44 And those who took of the bread were five thousand men.
44 The number of men who were fed was five thousand.
45 And straight away he made his disciples get into the boat, and go before him to the other side to Beth-saida, while he himself sent the people away.
45 At once Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to Bethsaida, on the other side of the lake, while he sent the crowd away.
46 And after he had sent them away, he went up into a mountain for prayer.
46 After saying good-bye to the people, he went away to a hill to pray.
47 And by evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he by himself on the land.
47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, while Jesus was alone on land.
48 And seeing that they had trouble in getting their boat through the water, because the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea; and he would have gone past them;
48 He saw that his disciples were straining at the oars, because they were rowing against the wind; so sometime between three and six o'clock in the morning, he came to them, walking on the water. He was going to pass them by,
49 But they, when they saw him walking on the sea, took him for a spirit, and gave a loud cry:
49 but they saw him walking on the water. "It's a ghost!" they thought, and screamed.
50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. But straight away he said to them, Take heart, it is I, have no fear.
50 They were all terrified when they saw him. Jesus spoke to them at once, "Courage!" he said. "It is I. Don't be afraid!"
51 And he went to them into the boat, and the wind went down, and they were full of wonder in themselves;
51 Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind died down. The disciples were completely amazed,
52 For it was not clear to them about the bread; but their hearts were hard.
52 because they had not understood the real meaning of the feeding of the five thousand; their minds could not grasp it.
53 And when they had gone across, they came to Gennesaret, and got their boat to land.
53 They crossed the lake and came to land at Gennesaret, where they tied up the boat.
54 And when they had got out of the boat, the people quickly had news of him,
54 As they left the boat, people recognized Jesus at once.
55 And went running through all the country round about, and took on their beds those who were ill, to where it was said that he was.
55 So they ran throughout the whole region; and wherever they heard he was, they brought to him the sick lying on their mats.
56 And wherever he went, into small towns, or great towns, or into the country, they took those who were ill into the market-places, requesting him that they might put their hands even on the edge of his robe: and all those who did so were made well.
56 And everywhere Jesus went, to villages, towns, or farms, people would take their sick to the marketplaces and beg him to let the sick at least touch the edge of his cloak. And all who touched it were made well.
