Mark 6

RHE

GW

1 And going out from thence, he went into his own country; and his disciples followed him.
1 Jesus left that place and went to his hometown. His disciples followed him.
2 And when the Sabbath was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were in admiration at his doctrine, saying: How came this man by all these things? and what wisdom is this that is given to him, and such mighty works as are wrought by his hands?
2 When the day of worship came, he began to teach in the synagogue. He amazed many who heard him. They asked, "Where did this man get these ideas? Who gave him this kind of wisdom and the ability to do such great miracles?
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? are not also his sisters here with us? And they were scandalized in regard of him.
3 Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" So they took offense at him.
4 And Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and in his own house, and among his own kindred.
4 But Jesus told them, "The only place a prophet isn't honored is in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house."
5 And he could not do any miracles there, only that he cured a few that were sick, laying his hands upon them.
5 He couldn't work any miracles there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and cure them.
6 And he wondered because of their unbelief, and he went through the villages round about teaching.
6 Their unbelief amazed him. Then Jesus went around to the villages and taught.
7 And he called the twelve; and began to send them two and two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.
7 He called the twelve apostles, sent them out two by two, and gave them authority over evil spirits.
8 And he commanded them that they should take nothing for the way, but a staff only; no scrip, no bread, nor money in their purse,
8 He instructed them to take nothing along on the trip except a walking stick. They were not to take any food, a traveling bag, or money in their pockets.
9 But to be shod with sandals, and that they should not put on two coats.
9 They could wear sandals but could not take along a change of clothes.
10 And he said to them: Wheresoever you shall enter into an house, there abide till you depart from that place.
10 He told them, "Whenever you go into a home, stay there until you're ready to leave that place.
11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you; going forth from thence, shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony to them.
11 Wherever people don't welcome you or listen to you, leave and shake the dust from your feet as a warning to them."
12 And going forth they preached men should do penance:
12 So the apostles went and told people that they should turn to God and change the way they think and act.
13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
13 They also forced many demons out of people and poured oil on many who were sick to cure them.
14 And king Herod heard, (for his name was made manifest,) and he said: John the Baptist is risen again from dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.
14 King Herod heard about Jesus, because Jesus' name had become well-known. Some people were saying, "John the Baptizer has come back to life. That's why he has the power to perform these miracles."
15 And others said: It is Elias. But others said: It is a prophet, as one of the prophets.
15 Others said, "He is Elijah." Still others said, "He is a prophet like one of the other prophets."
16 Which Herod hearing, said: John whom I beheaded, he is risen again from the dead.
16 But when Herod heard about it, he said, "I had John's head cut off, and he has come back to life!"
17 For Herod himself had sent and apprehended John, and bound him prison for the sake of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.
17 Herod had sent men who had arrested John, tied him up, and put him in prison. Herod did that for Herodias, whom he had married. (She used to be his brother Philip's wife.)
18 For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.
18 John had been telling Herod, "It's not right for you to be married to your brother's wife."
19 Now Herodias laid snares for him: and was desirous to put him to death and could not.
19 So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she wasn't allowed to do it
20 For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man: and kept him, and when he heard him, did many things: and he heard him willingly.
20 because Herod was afraid of John. Herod knew that John was a fair and holy man, so he protected him. When he listened to John, he would become very disturbed, and yet he liked to listen to him.
21 And when a convenient day was come, Herod made a supper for his birthday, for the princes, and tribunes, and chief men of Galilee.
21 An opportunity finally came on Herod's birthday. Herod gave a dinner for his top officials, army officers, and the most important people of Galilee.
22 And when the daughter of the same Herodias had come in, and had danced, and pleased Herod, and them that were at table with him, the king said to the damsel: Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
22 His daughter, that is, Herodias' daughter, came in and danced. Herod and his guests were delighted with her. The king told the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."
23 And he swore to her: Whatsoever thou shalt ask I will give thee, though it be the half of my kingdom.
23 He swore an oath to her: "I'll give you anything you ask for, up to half of my kingdom."
24 Who when she was gone out, said to her mother, What shall I ask? But her mother said: The head of John the Baptist.
24 So she went out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother said, "Ask for the head of John the Baptizer."
25 And when she was come in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying: I will that forthwith thou give me in a dish, the head of John the Baptist.
25 So the girl hurried back to the king with her request. She said, "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter at once."
26 And the king was struck sad. Yet because of his oath, and because of them that were with him at table, he would not displease her:
26 The king deeply regretted his promise. But because of his oath and his guests, he didn't want to refuse her.
27 But sending an executioner, he commanded that his head should be brought in a dish.
27 Immediately, the king sent a guard and ordered him to bring John's head. The guard cut off John's head in prison.
28 And he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a dish: and gave to the damsel, and the damsel gave it her mother.
28 Then he brought the head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
29 Which his disciples hearing came, and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came for his body and laid it in a tomb.
30 And the apostles coming together unto Jesus, related to him all things that they had done and taught.
30 The apostles gathered around Jesus. They reported to him everything they had done and taught.
31 And he said to them: Come apart into a desert place, and rest a little. For there were many coming and going: and they had not so much as time to eat.
31 So he said to them, "Let's go to a place where we can be alone to rest for a while." Many people were coming and going, and Jesus and the apostles didn't even have a chance to eat.
32 And going up into a ship, they went into a desert place apart.
32 So they went away in a boat to a place where they could be alone.
33 And they saw them going away, and many knew: and they ran flocking thither foot from all the cities, and were there before them.
33 But many people saw them leave and recognized them. The people ran from all the cities and arrived ahead of them.
34 And Jesus going out saw a great multitude: and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
34 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd and felt sorry for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. So he spent a lot of time teaching them.
35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past:
35 When it was late, his disciples came to him. They said, "No one lives around here, and it's already late.
36 Send them away, that going into the next villages and towns, they may buy themselves meat to eat.
36 Send the people to the closest farms and villages to buy themselves something to eat."
37 And he answering said to them: Give you them to eat. And they said to him: Let us go and buy bread for two hundred pence, and we will give them to eat.
37 Jesus replied, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "Should we go and spend about a year's wages on bread to feed them?"
38 And he saith to them: How many loaves have you? go and see. And when they knew, they say: Five, and two fishes.
38 He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." When they found out, they told him, "Five loaves of bread and two fish."
39 And he commanded them that they should make them all sit down by companies upon the green grass.
39 Then he ordered all of them to sit down in groups on the green grass.
40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.
40 They sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
41 And when he had taken the five loaves, and the two fishes: looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave to his disciples to set before them: and the two fishes he divided among them all.
41 After he took the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed the food. He broke the loaves apart and kept giving them to the disciples to give to the people. He also gave pieces of the two fish to everyone.
42 And they all did eat, and had their fill.
42 All of them ate as much as they wanted.
43 And they took up the leavings, twelve full baskets of fragments, and of the fishes.
43 When they picked up the leftover pieces, they filled twelve baskets with bread and fish.
44 And they that did eat, were five thousand men.
44 There were 5,000 men who had eaten the bread.
45 And immediately he obliged his disciples to go up into the ship, that they might go before him over the water to Bethsaida, whilst he dismissed the people.
45 Jesus quickly made his disciples get into a boat and cross to Bethsaida ahead of him while he sent the people away.
46 And when he had dismissed them, he went up to the mountain to pray,
46 After saying goodbye to them, he went up a mountain to pray.
47 And when it was late, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and himself alone on the land.
47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
48 And seeing them labouring in rowing, (for the wind was against them,) and about the fourth watch of the night, he cometh to them walking upon the sea, and he would have passed by them.
48 Jesus saw that they were in a lot of trouble as they rowed, because they were going against the wind. Between three and six o'clock in the morning, he came to them. He was walking on the sea. He wanted to pass by them.
49 But they seeing him walking upon the sea, thought it was an apparition, and they cried out.
49 When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought, "It's a ghost!" and they began to scream.
50 For they all saw him, and were troubled bled. And immediately he spoke with them, and said to them: Have a good heart, it is I, fear ye not.
50 All of them saw him and were terrified. Immediately, he said, "Calm down! It's me. Don't be afraid!"
51 And he went up to them into the ship, and the wind ceased: and they were far more astonished within themselves:
51 He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped blowing. The disciples were astounded.
52 For they understood not concerning the loaves; for their heart was blinded.
52 (They didn't understand what had happened with the loaves of bread. Instead, their minds were closed.)
53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Genezareth, and set to the shore.
53 They crossed the sea, came to shore at Gennesaret, and anchored there.
54 And when they were gone out of the ship, immediately they knew him:
54 As soon as they stepped out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus.
55 And running through that whole country, they began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.
55 They ran all over the countryside and began to carry the sick on cots to any place where they heard he was.
56 And whithersoever he entered, into towns or into villages or cities, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
56 Whenever he would go into villages, cities, or farms, people would put their sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch the edge of his clothes. Everyone who touched his clothes was made well.
