GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 And He went out from thence and came into His own country, and His disciples followed Him.
1
Jesus left that place and went to his hometown. His disciples followed him.
2 And when the Sabbath day had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "From whence hath this man these things? And what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
2
When the day of worship came, he began to teach in the synagogue. He amazed many who heard him. They asked, "Where did this man get these ideas? Who gave him this kind of wisdom and the ability to do such great miracles?
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses, and of Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they were offended at Him.
3
Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" So they took offense at him.
4 But Jesus said unto them, "A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house."
4
But Jesus told them, "The only place a prophet isn't honored is in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house."
5 And He could do no mighty works there, except that He laid His hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
5
He couldn't work any miracles there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and cure them.
6 And He marveled because of their unbelief. And He went round about the villages teaching.
6
Their unbelief amazed him. Then Jesus went around to the villages and taught.
7 And He called unto Him the twelve, and began to send them forth two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits,
7
He called the twelve apostles, sent them out two by two, and gave them authority over evil spirits.
8 and commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only -- no wallet, no bread, and no money in their purse,
8
He instructed them to take nothing along on the trip except a walking stick. They were not to take any food, a traveling bag, or money in their pockets.
9 but be shod with sandals, and not put on two coats.
9
They could wear sandals but could not take along a change of clothes.
10 And He said unto them, "In whatever place ye enter into a house, there abide until ye depart from that place.
10
He told them, "Whenever you go into a home, stay there until you're ready to leave that place.
11 And whosoever shall not receive you nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the Day of Judgment than for that city."
11
Wherever people don't welcome you or listen to you, leave and shake the dust from your feet as a warning to them."
12 And they went out and preached that men should repent.
12
So the apostles went and told people that they should turn to God and change the way they think and act.
13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.
13
They also forced many demons out of people and poured oil on many who were sick to cure them.
14 And King Herod heard of Him, for His name was spread abroad. And he said, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and therefore these mighty works show forth themselves in him."
14
King Herod heard about Jesus, because Jesus' name had become well-known. Some people were saying, "John the Baptizer has come back to life. That's why he has the power to perform these miracles."
15 Others said, "It is Elijah," and others said, "It is a prophet, or like one of the prophets."
15
Others said, "He is Elijah." Still others said, "He is a prophet like one of the other prophets."
16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, "It is John, whom I beheaded; he is risen from the dead."
16
But when Herod heard about it, he said, "I had John's head cut off, and he has come back to life!"
17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and had bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.
17
Herod had sent men who had arrested John, tied him up, and put him in prison. Herod did that for Herodias, whom he had married. (She used to be his brother Philip's wife.)
18 For John had said unto Herod, "It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife."
18
John had been telling Herod, "It's not right for you to be married to your brother's wife."
19 Therefore Herodias had an inward grudge against him and would have killed him, but she could not;
19
So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she wasn't allowed to do it
20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and holy, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
20
because Herod was afraid of John. Herod knew that John was a fair and holy man, so he protected him. When he listened to John, he would become very disturbed, and yet he liked to listen to him.
21 And when a convenient day had come, when Herod on his birthday gave a supper for his lords, high officers, and chief officials of Galilee,
21
An opportunity finally came on Herod's birthday. Herod gave a dinner for his top officials, army officers, and the most important people of Galilee.
22 and when the daughter of the said Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, "Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it to thee."
22
His daughter, that is, Herodias' daughter, came in and danced. Herod and his guests were delighted with her. The king told the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."
23 And he swore unto her, "Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it to thee, unto the half of my kingdom."
23
He swore an oath to her: "I'll give you anything you ask for, up to half of my kingdom."
24 And she went forth and said unto her mother, "What shall I ask?" And Herodias said, "The head of John the Baptist."
24
So she went out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother said, "Ask for the head of John the Baptizer."
25 And she came back straightway with haste unto the king and asked, saying, "I will that thou give me at once on a charger the head of John the Baptist."
25
So the girl hurried back to the king with her request. She said, "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter at once."
26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, yet for his oath's sake and for their sakes who sat with him, he would not reject her.
26
The king deeply regretted his promise. But because of his oath and his guests, he didn't want to refuse her.
27 And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded John's head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison,
27
Immediately, the king sent a guard and ordered him to bring John's head. The guard cut off John's head in prison.
28 and brought his head on a charger and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother.
28
Then he brought the head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
29 And when John's disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
29
When John's disciples heard about this, they came for his body and laid it in a tomb.
30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.
30
The apostles gathered around Jesus. They reported to him everything they had done and taught.
31 And He said unto them, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while." For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure, even so much as to eat.
31
So he said to them, "Let's go to a place where we can be alone to rest for a while." Many people were coming and going, and Jesus and the apostles didn't even have a chance to eat.
32 And they departed into a desert place by boat privately.
32
So they went away in a boat to a place where they could be alone.
33 And the people saw them departing, and many recognized Him and ran thither on foot out of all the cities and outdistanced them, and came together unto Him.
33
But many people saw them leave and recognized them. The people ran from all the cities and arrived ahead of them.
34 And Jesus, when He came out, saw many people and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
34
When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd and felt sorry for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. So he spent a lot of time teaching them.
35 And when the day was now far spent, His disciples came unto Him and said, "This is a desert place, and now the day is far spent.
35
When it was late, his disciples came to him. They said, "No one lives around here, and it's already late.
36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about and into the villages and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat."
36
Send the people to the closest farms and villages to buy themselves something to eat."
37 He answered and said unto them, "Give ye them to eat." And they said to Him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread and give them to eat?"
37
Jesus replied, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "Should we go and spend about a year's wages on bread to feed them?"
38 He said unto them, "How many loaves have ye? Go and see." And when they knew, they said, "Five, and two fishes."
38
He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." When they found out, they told him, "Five loaves of bread and two fish."
39 And He commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.
39
Then he ordered all of them to sit down in groups on the green grass.
40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.
40
They sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to Heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and He divided the two fishes among them all.
41
After he took the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed the food. He broke the loaves apart and kept giving them to the disciples to give to the people. He also gave pieces of the two fish to everyone.
42 And they all ate and were filled.
42
All of them ate as much as they wanted.
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments and of the fishes.
43
When they picked up the leftover pieces, they filled twelve baskets with bread and fish.
44 And those who ate of the loaves were about five thousand men.
44
There were 5,000 men who had eaten the bread.
45 And straightway He constrained His disciples to get into the boat, and go to the other side before Him unto Bethsaida, while He sent away the people.
45
Jesus quickly made his disciples get into a boat and cross to Bethsaida ahead of him while he sent the people away.
46 And when He had sent them away, He departed onto a mountain to pray.
46
After saying goodbye to them, he went up a mountain to pray.
47 And when evening had come, the boat was in the midst of the sea; and He was alone on the land.
47
When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
48 And He saw them toiling in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them. And about the fourth watch of the night, He came unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
48
Jesus saw that they were in a lot of trouble as they rowed, because they were going against the wind. Between three and six o'clock in the morning, he came to them. He was walking on the sea. He wanted to pass by them.
49 But when they saw Him walking upon the sea, they supposed it was a spirit and cried out,
49
When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought, "It's a ghost!" and they began to scream.
50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. And immediately He talked with them, and said unto them, "Be of good cheer! It is I; be not afraid."
50
All of them saw him and were terrified. Immediately, he said, "Calm down! It's me. Don't be afraid!"
51 And He went up unto them and into the boat, and the wind ceased. And they were sore amazed within themselves beyond measure and wondered,
51
He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped blowing. The disciples were astounded.
52 for they had considered not the miracle of the loaves, as their hearts were hardened.
52
(They didn't understand what had happened with the loaves of bread. Instead, their minds were closed.)
53 And when they had crossed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.
53
They crossed the sea, came to shore at Gennesaret, and anchored there.
54 And when they had come out of the boat, straightway the people recognized Him,
54
As soon as they stepped out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus.
55 and ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry on beds those who were sick to where they heard He was.
55
They ran all over the countryside and began to carry the sick on cots to any place where they heard he was.
56 And whithersoever He entered, into villages or cities or the country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought Him that they might touch even the border of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made whole.
56
Whenever he would go into villages, cities, or farms, people would put their sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch the edge of his clothes. Everyone who touched his clothes was made well.
