Mark 6:30-52

CEBA 30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. NIV 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. CEBA 31 Many people were coming and going, so there was no time to eat. He said to the apostles, "Come by yourselves to a secluded place and rest for a while." NIV 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” CEBA 32 They departed in a boat by themselves for a deserted place. NIV 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. CEBA 33 Many people saw them leaving and recognized them, so they ran ahead from all the cities and arrived before them. NIV 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. CEBA 34 When Jesus arrived and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things. NIV 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. CEBA 35 Late in the day, his disciples came to him and said, "This is an isolated place, and it's already late in the day. NIV 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. CEBA 36 Send them away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something to eat for themselves." NIV 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” CEBA 37 He replied, "You give them something to eat." But they said to him, "Should we go off and buy bread worth almost eight months' pay and give it to them to eat?" NIV 37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” CEBA 38 He said to them, "How much bread do you have? Take a look." After checking, they said, "Five loaves of bread and two fish." NIV 38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.” CEBA 39 He directed the disciples to seat all the people in groups as though they were having a banquet on the green grass. NIV 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. CEBA 40 They sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. NIV 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. CEBA 41 He took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke the loaves into pieces, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. NIV 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. CEBA 42 Everyone ate until they were full. NIV 42 They all ate and were satisfied, CEBA 43 They filled twelve baskets with the leftover pieces of bread and fish. NIV 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. CEBA 44 About five thousand had eaten. NIV 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. CEBA 45 Right then, Jesus made his disciples get into a boat and go ahead to the other side of the lake, toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. NIV 45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. CEBA 46 After saying good-bye to them, Jesus went up onto a mountain to pray. NIV 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. CEBA 47 Evening came and the boat was in the middle of the lake, but he was alone on the land. NIV 47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. CEBA 48 He saw his disciples struggling. They were trying to row forward, but the wind was blowing against them. Very early in the morning, he came to them, walking on the lake. He intended to pass by them. NIV 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, CEBA 49 When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost and they screamed. NIV 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, CEBA 50 Seeing him was terrifying to all of them. Just then he spoke to them, "Be encouraged! It's me. Don't be afraid." NIV 50 because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” CEBA 51 He got into the boat, and the wind settled down. His disciples were so baffled they were beside themselves. NIV 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, CEBA 52 That's because they hadn't understood about the loaves. Their hearts had been changed so that they resisted God's ways. NIV 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
