NIV 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. NKJV 35 When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, "This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. NIV 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. NKJV 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat." And they said to Him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?" NIV 37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” NKJV 38 But He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." And when they found out they said, "Five, and two fish." NIV 38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.” NKJV 39 Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. NIV 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. NKJV 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. NIV 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. NKJV 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. NIV 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. NKJV 42 So they all ate and were filled. NIV 42 They all ate and were satisfied, NKJV 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. NIV 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. NKJV 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.
