GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 Then came together unto Him the Pharisees and certain of the scribes, who came from Jerusalem.
1
The Pharisees and some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus.
2 And when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled (that is to say, unwashed) hands, they found fault.
2
They saw that some of his disciples were unclean because they ate without washing their hands.
3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat, unless they wash their hands oft, holding to the tradition of the elders.
3
(The Pharisees, like all other Jewish people, don't eat unless they have properly washed their hands. They follow the traditions of their ancestors.
4 And when they come from the market, they eat not unless they wash; and there are many other customs which they have received and hold to, as the washing of cups, pots, brazen vessels and of tables.
4
When they come from the marketplace, they don't eat unless they have washed first. They have been taught to follow many other rules. For example, they must also wash their cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables. )
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, "Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?"
5
The Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples follow the traditions taught by our ancestors? They are unclean because they don't wash their hands before they eat!"
6 He answered and said unto them, "Well hath Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written: `This people honoreth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.
6
Jesus told them, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites in Scripture: 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
7 Therefore, in vain do they worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.'
7
Their worship of me is pointless, because their teachings are rules made by humans.'
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold to the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups, and many other like things ye do."
8
"You abandon the commandments of God to follow human traditions."
9 And He said unto them, "Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
9
He added, "You have no trouble rejecting the commandments of God in order to keep your own traditions!
10 For Moses said, `Honor thy father and thy mother,' and, `Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death.'
10
For example, Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother' and 'Whoever curses father or mother must be put to death.'
11 But ye say that if a man shall say to his father or mother, `It is Corban' (that is to say, a gift of whatsoever thou mightest have profited from me), he shall be freed;
11
But you say, 'If a person tells his father or mother that whatever he might have used to help them is corban (that is, an offering to God),
12 and ye suffer him no more to do aught for his father or his mother,
12
he no longer has to do anything for his father or mother.'
13 thus making the Word of God of no effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered. And many like things do ye."
13
Because of your traditions you have destroyed the authority of God's word. And you do many other things like that."
14 And when He had called all the people unto Him, He said unto them, "Hearken unto Me every one of you, and understand:
14
Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and try to understand!
15 There is nothing from outside a man that, entering into him, can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
15
Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It's what comes out of a person that makes him unclean.
16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear."
16
Let the person who has ears listen!"
17 And when He had entered into the house away from the people, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.
17
When he had left the people and gone home, his disciples asked him about this illustration.
18 And He said unto them, "Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive that whatsoever thing from outside entereth into a man, it cannot defile him,
18
Jesus said to them, "Don't you understand? Don't you know that whatever goes into a person from the outside can't make him unclean?
19 because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly and goeth out into the drain, thereby purging all meats?"
19
It doesn't go into his thoughts but into his stomach and then into a toilet." (By saying this, Jesus declared all foods acceptable.)
20 And He said, "That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
20
He continued, "It's what comes out of a person that makes him unclean.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
21
Evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder,
22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
22
adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person.
23 all these evil things come from within and defile the man."
23
All these evils come from within and make a person unclean."
24 And from thence He arose and went into the region of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into a house, and would have no man know about it; but He could not be hid.
24
Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre. He didn't want anyone to know that he was staying in a house there. However, it couldn't be kept a secret.
25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of Him, and came and fell at His feet.
25
A woman whose little daughter had an evil spirit heard about Jesus. She went to him and bowed down.
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by nation, and she besought Him that He would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
26
The woman happened to be Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She asked him to force the demon out of her daughter.
27 But Jesus said unto her, "Let the children first be filled, for it is not meet to take the children's bread and to cast it unto the dogs."
27
Jesus said to her, "First, let the children eat all they want. It's not right to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs."
28 And she answered and said unto Him, "Yes, Lord, yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs."
28
She answered him, "Lord, even the dogs under the table eat some of the children's scraps."
29 And He said unto her, "For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter."
29
Jesus said to her, "Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter."
30 And when she had come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.
30
The woman went home and found the little child lying on her bed, and the demon was gone.
31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, He came unto the Sea of Galilee through the midst of the region of Decapolis.
31
Jesus then left the neighborhood of Tyre. He went through Sidon and the territory of the Ten Cities to the Sea of Galilee.
32 And they brought unto Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they besought Him to put His hand upon him.
32
Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and who also had a speech defect. They begged Jesus to lay his hand on him.
33 And He took him aside from the multitude and put His fingers into his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue.
33
Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. He put his fingers into the man's ears, and after spitting, he touched the man's tongue.
34 And looking up to Heaven, He sighed and said unto him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened."
34
Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and said to the man, "Ephphatha!" which means, "Be opened!"
35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed and he spoke plainly.
35
At once the man could hear and talk normally.
36 And He charged them that they should tell no man. But the more He charged them, the more widely they proclaimed it
36
Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them, the more they spread the news.
37 and were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He hath done all things well; he maketh both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak."
37
Jesus completely amazed the people. They said, "He has done everything well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute talk."
