Mark 7:1-13

CSB 1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Him. NIV 1 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus CSB 2 They observed that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unclean-that is, unwashed-hands. NIV 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. CSB 3 (For the Pharisees, in fact all the Jews, will not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, keeping the tradition of the elders. NIV 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. CSB 4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they have washed. And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, jugs, copper utensils, and dining couches.) NIV 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles. ) CSB 5 Then the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, "Why don't Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ritually unclean hands?" NIV 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?” CSB 6 He answered them, "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. NIV 6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. CSB 7 They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men. NIV 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’ CSB 8 Disregarding the command of God, you keep the tradition of men." NIV 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” CSB 9 He also said to them, "You completely invalidate God's command in order to maintain your tradition! NIV 9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observeyour own traditions! CSB 10 For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death. NIV 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ CSB 11 But you say, 'If a man tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is Corban ' " (that is, a gift [committed to the temple]), NIV 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— CSB 12 "you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. NIV 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. CSB 13 You revoke God's word by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things." NIV 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
