GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples unto Him and said unto them,
1
About that time there was once again a large crowd with nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples and said to them,
2 "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with Me three days and have nothing to eat.
2
"I feel sorry for the people. They have been with me three days now and have nothing to eat.
3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way; for divers of them came from afar."
3
If I send them home before they've eaten, they will become exhausted on the road. Some of them have come a long distance."
4 And His disciples answered Him, "From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?"
4
His disciples asked him, "Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people in this place where no one lives?"
5 And He asked them, "How many loaves have ye?" And they said, "Seven."
5
Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" They answered, "Seven."
6 And He commanded the people to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks and broke, and gave to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the people.
6
He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and gave thanks to God. Then he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples to serve to the people.
7 And they had a few small fishes, and He blessed them and commanded to set them also before them.
7
They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and said that the fish should also be served to the people.
8 So they ate and were filled; and they took up of the broken meat that was left, seven baskets.
8
The people ate as much as they wanted. The disciples picked up the leftover pieces and filled seven large baskets.
9 And those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away.
9
About four thousand people were there. Then he sent the people on their way.
10 And straightway He entered into a boat with His disciples and came into the region of Dalmanutha.
10
After that, Jesus and his disciples got into a boat and went into the region of Dalmanutha.
11 And the Pharisees came forth and began to question with Him, seeking from Him a sign from Heaven, testing Him.
11
The Pharisees went to Jesus and began to argue with him. They tested him by demanding that he perform a miraculous sign from heaven.
12 And He sighed deeply in His spirit and said, "Why doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say unto you, there shall no sign be given unto this generation."
12
With a deep sigh he asked, "Why do these people demand a sign? I can guarantee this truth: If these people are given a sign, it will be far different than what they want!"
13 And He left them and, entering into the boat again, departed to the other side.
13
Then he left them there. He got into a boat again and crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the boat with them more than one loaf.
14
The disciples had forgotten to take any bread along and had only one loaf with them in the boat.
15 And He charged them, saying, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod."
15
Jesus warned them, "Be careful! Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!"
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have no bread."
16
They had been discussing with one another that they didn't have any bread.
17 And when Jesus knew it, He said unto them, "Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? Do ye not yet perceive, nor understand? Have ye your heart yet hardened?
17
Jesus knew what they were saying and asked them, "Why are you discussing the fact that you don't have any bread? Don't you understand yet? Don't you catch on? Are your minds closed?
18 Having eyes, see ye not? And having ears, hear ye not? And do ye not remember?
18
Are you blind and deaf? Don't you remember?
19 When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up?" They said unto Him, "Twelve."
19
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?" They told him, "Twelve."
20 "And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up?" And they said, "Seven."
20
"When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many large baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?" They answered him, "Seven."
21 And He said unto them, "How is it that ye do not understand?"
21
He asked them, "Don't you catch on yet?"
22 And He came to Bethsaida, and they brought a blind man unto Him, and besought Him to touch him.
22
As they came to Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus. They begged Jesus to touch him.
23 And He took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands upon him, He asked him if he saw anything.
23
Jesus took the blind man's hand and led him out of the village. He spit into the man's eyes and placed his hands on him. Jesus asked him, "Can you see anything?"
24 And he looked up and said, "I see men as trees, walking."
24
The man looked up and said, "I see people. They look like trees walking around."
25 After that He put His hands again upon his eyes and made him look up; and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
25
Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes a second time, and the man saw clearly. His sight was normal again. He could see everything clearly even at a distance.
26 And He sent him away to his house, saying, "Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town."
26
Jesus told him when he sent him home, "Don't go into the village."
27 And Jesus went out with His disciples into the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, saying unto them, "Who do men say that I am?"
27
Then Jesus and his disciples went to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say I am?"
28 And they answered, "John the Baptist; but some say Elijah, and others, one of the prophets."
28
They answered him, "Some say you are John the Baptizer, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets."
29 And He said unto them, "But whom say ye that I am?" And Peter answered and said unto Him, "Thou art the Christ."
29
He asked them, "But who do you say I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah!"
30 And He charged them that they should tell no man of Him.
30
He ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and by the chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
31
Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a lot. He taught them that he would be rejected by the leaders, the chief priests, and the scribes. He would be killed, but after three days he would come back to life.
32 And He spoke that saying openly. And Peter took Him and began to rebuke Him.
32
He told them very clearly what he meant. Peter took him aside and objected to this.
33 But when He had turned about and looked on His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, "Get thee behind Me, Satan; for thou savorest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men."
33
Jesus turned, looked at his disciples, and objected to what Peter said. Jesus said, "Get out of my way, Satan! You aren't thinking the way God thinks but the way humans think."
34 And when He had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, He said unto them, "Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
34
Then Jesus called the crowd to himself along with his disciples. He said to them, "Those who want to follow me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and the Gospel's, the same shall save it.
35
Those who want to save their lives will lose them. But those who lose their lives for me and for the Good News will save them.
36 For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
36
What good does it do for people to win the whole world yet lose their lives?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
37
Or what should a person give in exchange for life?
38 Whosoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of Man be ashamed when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."
38
If people are ashamed of me and what I say in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of those people when he comes with the holy angels in his Father's glory."
