KJV 20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away! ESV 20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, "How did the fig tree wither at once?" KJV 21 Jesus answered and said unto them,Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. ESV 21 And Jesus answered them, "Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' it will happen. KJV 22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. ESV 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith." KJV 23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? ESV 23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" KJV 24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things. ESV 24 Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. KJV 25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? ESV 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?" And they discussed it among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' KJV 26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. ESV 26 But if we say, 'From man,'we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet." KJV 27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them,Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. ESV 27 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. KJV 28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. ESV 28 "What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' KJV 29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. ESV 29 And he answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind and went. KJV 30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. ESV 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, 'I go, sir,' but did not go. KJV 31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you,That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ESV 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. KJV 32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him. ESV 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him. KJV 33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: ESV 33 "Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. KJV 34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. ESV 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. KJV 35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. ESV 35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. KJV 36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. ESV 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. KJV 37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ESV 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' KJV 38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. ESV 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' KJV 39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. ESV 39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. KJV 40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? ESV 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" KJV 41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. ESV 41 They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." KJV 42 Jesus saith unto them,Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? ESV 42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? KJV 43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. ESV 43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. KJV 44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. ESV 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him." KJV 45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them. ESV 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. KJV 46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet. ESV 46 And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.
KJV 1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, ESV 1 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, KJV 2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, ESV 2 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, KJV 3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. ESV 3 and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. KJV 4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. ESV 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.' KJV 5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: ESV 5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, KJV 6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. ESV 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. KJV 7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. ESV 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. KJV 8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. ESV 8 Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. KJV 9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. ESV 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.' KJV 10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. ESV 10 And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. KJV 11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: ESV 11 "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. KJV 12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. ESV 12 And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. KJV 13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ESV 13 Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' KJV 14 For many are called, but few are chosen. ESV 14 For many are called, but few are chosen." KJV 15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. ESV 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. KJV 16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. ESV 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. KJV 17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? ESV 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" KJV 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said,Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? ESV 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? KJV 19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. ESV 19 Show me the coin for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. KJV 20 And he saith unto them,Whose is this image and superscription? ESV 20 And Jesus said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" KJV 21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them,Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. ESV 21 They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." KJV 22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. ESV 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. KJV 23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, ESV 23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, KJV 24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. ESV 24 saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.' KJV 25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: ESV 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother. KJV 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. ESV 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. KJV 27 And last of all the woman died also. ESV 27 After them all, the woman died. KJV 28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. ESV 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her." KJV 29 Jesus answered and said unto them,Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. ESV 29 But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. KJV 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. ESV 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. KJV 31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, ESV 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: KJV 32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. ESV 32 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not God of the dead, but of the living." KJV 33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. ESV 33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching. KJV 34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. ESV 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. KJV 35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, ESV 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. KJV 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? ESV 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" KJV 37 Jesus said unto him,Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. ESV 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. KJV 38 This is the first and great commandment. ESV 38 This is the great and first commandment. KJV 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ESV 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. KJV 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. ESV 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets." KJV 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, ESV 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, KJV 42 Saying,What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. ESV 42 saying, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." KJV 43 He saith unto them,How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, ESV 43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, KJV 44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? ESV 44 "'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet'? KJV 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? ESV 45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?" KJV 46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. ESV 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
KJV 1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, ESV 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, KJV 2 Saying,The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: ESV 2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, KJV 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. ESV 3 so practice and observe whatever they tell you--but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice. KJV 4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.#rl ESV 4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.#rl KJV 5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, ESV 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, KJV 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, ESV 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues KJV 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. ESV 7 and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. KJV 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. ESV 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. KJV 9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. ESV 9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. KJV 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. ESV 10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. KJV 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. ESV 11 The greatest among you shall be your servant. KJV 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. ESV 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. KJV 13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. ESV 13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. KJV 14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.#rl KJV 15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. ESV 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. KJV 16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! ESV 16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' KJV 17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? ESV 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? KJV 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. ESV 18 And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.' KJV 19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?#rl ESV 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? KJV 20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. ESV 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. KJV 21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.#rl ESV 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.#rl KJV 22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. ESV 22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it. KJV 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ESV 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. KJV 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. ESV 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! KJV 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. ESV 25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. KJV 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. ESV 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. KJV 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. ESV 27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. KJV 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. ESV 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. KJV 29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, ESV 29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, KJV 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. ESV 30 saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' KJV 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. ESV 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. KJV 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. ESV 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. KJV 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? ESV 33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? KJV 34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: ESV 34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, KJV 35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ESV 35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. KJV 36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.#rl ESV 36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.#rl KJV 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! ESV 37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! KJV 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. ESV 38 See, your house is left to you desolate. KJV 39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. ESV 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
KJV 1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. ESV 1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. KJV 2 And Jesus said unto them,See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. ESV 2 But he answered them, "You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." KJV 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? ESV 3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" KJV 4 And Jesus answered and said unto them,Take heed that no man deceive you. ESV 4 And Jesus answered them, "See that no one leads you astray. KJV 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. ESV 5 For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray. KJV 6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. ESV 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. KJV 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. ESV 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. KJV 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. ESV 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. KJV 9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. ESV 9 "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. KJV 10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. ESV 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. KJV 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. ESV 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. KJV 12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. ESV 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. KJV 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. ESV 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. KJV 14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. ESV 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. KJV 15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) ESV 15 "So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), KJV 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: ESV 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. KJV 17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: ESV 17 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, KJV 18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. ESV 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. KJV 19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! ESV 19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! KJV 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: ESV 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. KJV 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. ESV 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. KJV 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. ESV 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. KJV 23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. ESV 23 Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!' do not believe it. KJV 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. ESV 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. KJV 25 Behold, I have told you before. ESV 25 See, I have told you beforehand. KJV 26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. ESV 26 So, if they say to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. KJV 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. ESV 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. KJV 28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. ESV 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. KJV 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: ESV 29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. KJV 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. ESV 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. KJV 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. ESV 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. KJV 32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: ESV 32 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. KJV 33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. ESV 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. KJV 34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. ESV 34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. KJV 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. ESV 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. KJV 36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. ESV 36 "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son,but the Father only. KJV 37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. ESV 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. KJV 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, ESV 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, KJV 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. ESV 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. KJV 40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. ESV 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. KJV 41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. ESV 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. KJV 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. ESV 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. KJV 43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. ESV 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. KJV 44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. ESV 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. KJV 45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? ESV 45 "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? KJV 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. ESV 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. KJV 47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. ESV 47 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. KJV 48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; ESV 48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed,' KJV 49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; ESV 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, KJV 50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, ESV 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know KJV 51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ESV 51 and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
KJV 1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. ESV 1 "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. KJV 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. ESV 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. KJV 3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: ESV 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, KJV 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ESV 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. KJV 5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. ESV 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. KJV 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. ESV 6 But at midnight there was a cry, 'Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' KJV 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. ESV 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. KJV 8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. ESV 8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' KJV 9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. ESV 9 But the wise answered, saying, 'Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' KJV 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. ESV 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. KJV 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. ESV 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.' KJV 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. ESV 12 But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' KJV 13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. ESV 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. KJV 14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. ESV 14 "For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. KJV 15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. ESV 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. KJV 16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. ESV 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. KJV 17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. ESV 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. KJV 18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. ESV 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. KJV 19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. ESV 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. KJV 20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. ESV 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' KJV 21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ESV 21 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' KJV 22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. ESV 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' KJV 23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ESV 23 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' KJV 24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: ESV 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, KJV 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. ESV 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' KJV 26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: ESV 26 But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? KJV 27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. ESV 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. KJV 28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. ESV 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. KJV 29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. ESV 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. KJV 30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ESV 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' KJV 31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: ESV 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. KJV 32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: ESV 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. KJV 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. ESV 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. KJV 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: ESV 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. KJV 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: ESV 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, KJV 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. ESV 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' KJV 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? ESV 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? KJV 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? ESV 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? KJV 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? ESV 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' KJV 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. ESV 40 And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' KJV 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: ESV 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. KJV 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: ESV 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, KJV 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ESV 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' KJV 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? ESV 44 Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' KJV 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. ESV 45 Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' KJV 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. ESV 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
KJV 1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, ESV 1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, KJV 2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. ESV 2 "You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." KJV 3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ESV 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, KJV 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. ESV 4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. KJV 5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people. ESV 5 But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people." KJV 6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, ESV 6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, KJV 7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. ESV 7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. KJV 8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? ESV 8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? KJV 9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. ESV 9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor." KJV 10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them,Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. ESV 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. KJV 11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. ESV 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. KJV 12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. ESV 12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. KJV 13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. ESV 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her." KJV 14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, ESV 14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests KJV 15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. ESV 15 and said, "What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. KJV 16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him. ESV 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. KJV 17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? ESV 17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?" KJV 18 And he said,Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. ESV 18 He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'" KJV 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. ESV 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
ESV 20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, "How did the fig tree wither at once?" ESV 21 And Jesus answered them, "Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' it will happen. ESV 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith." ESV 23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" ESV 24 Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. ESV 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?" And they discussed it among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' ESV 26 But if we say, 'From man,'we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet." ESV 27 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. ESV 28 "What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' ESV 29 And he answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind and went. ESV 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, 'I go, sir,' but did not go. ESV 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. ESV 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him. ESV 33 "Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. ESV 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. ESV 35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. ESV 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. ESV 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' ESV 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' ESV 39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. ESV 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" ESV 41 They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." ESV 42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? ESV 43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. ESV 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him." ESV 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. ESV 46 And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.
ESV 1 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, ESV 2 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, ESV 3 and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. ESV 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.' ESV 5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, ESV 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. ESV 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. ESV 8 Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. ESV 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.' ESV 10 And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. ESV 11 "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. ESV 12 And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. ESV 13 Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' ESV 14 For many are called, but few are chosen." ESV 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. ESV 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. ESV 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" ESV 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? ESV 19 Show me the coin for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. ESV 20 And Jesus said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" ESV 21 They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." ESV 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. ESV 23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, ESV 24 saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.' ESV 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother. ESV 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. ESV 27 After them all, the woman died. ESV 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her." ESV 29 But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. ESV 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. ESV 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: ESV 32 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not God of the dead, but of the living." ESV 33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching. ESV 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. ESV 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ESV 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" ESV 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ESV 38 This is the great and first commandment. ESV 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ESV 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets." ESV 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, ESV 42 saying, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." ESV 43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, ESV 44 "'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet'? ESV 45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?" ESV 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
ESV 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ESV 2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, ESV 3 so practice and observe whatever they tell you--but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice. ESV 4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.#rl ESV 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, ESV 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues ESV 7 and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. ESV 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. ESV 9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. ESV 10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. ESV 11 The greatest among you shall be your servant. ESV 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. ESV 13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. ESV 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. ESV 16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' ESV 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? ESV 18 And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.' ESV 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? ESV 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. ESV 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.#rl ESV 22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it. ESV 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. ESV 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! ESV 25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. ESV 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. ESV 27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. ESV 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. ESV 29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, ESV 30 saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' ESV 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. ESV 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. ESV 33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? ESV 34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, ESV 35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. ESV 36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.#rl ESV 37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! ESV 38 See, your house is left to you desolate. ESV 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
ESV 1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. ESV 2 But he answered them, "You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." ESV 3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" ESV 4 And Jesus answered them, "See that no one leads you astray. ESV 5 For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray. ESV 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. ESV 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. ESV 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. ESV 9 "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. ESV 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. ESV 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. ESV 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. ESV 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. ESV 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. ESV 15 "So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), ESV 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ESV 17 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, ESV 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. ESV 19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! ESV 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. ESV 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. ESV 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. ESV 23 Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!' do not believe it. ESV 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. ESV 25 See, I have told you beforehand. ESV 26 So, if they say to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. ESV 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ESV 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. ESV 29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ESV 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. ESV 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. ESV 32 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. ESV 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. ESV 34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ESV 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. ESV 36 "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son,but the Father only. ESV 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ESV 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, ESV 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ESV 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. ESV 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. ESV 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. ESV 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. ESV 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. ESV 45 "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? ESV 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. ESV 47 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. ESV 48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed,' ESV 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, ESV 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know ESV 51 and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
ESV 1 "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. ESV 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. ESV 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, ESV 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. ESV 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. ESV 6 But at midnight there was a cry, 'Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' ESV 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. ESV 8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' ESV 9 But the wise answered, saying, 'Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' ESV 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. ESV 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.' ESV 12 But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' ESV 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. ESV 14 "For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. ESV 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. ESV 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. ESV 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. ESV 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. ESV 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. ESV 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' ESV 21 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' ESV 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' ESV 23 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' ESV 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, ESV 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' ESV 26 But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? ESV 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. ESV 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. ESV 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. ESV 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' ESV 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. ESV 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. ESV 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. ESV 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ESV 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, ESV 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' ESV 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? ESV 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? ESV 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' ESV 40 And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' ESV 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. ESV 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, ESV 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' ESV 44 Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' ESV 45 Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' ESV 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
ESV 1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, ESV 2 "You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." ESV 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, ESV 4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. ESV 5 But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people." ESV 6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, ESV 7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. ESV 8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? ESV 9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor." ESV 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. ESV 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. ESV 12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. ESV 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her." ESV 14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ESV 15 and said, "What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. ESV 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. ESV 17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?" ESV 18 He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'" ESV 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
