1 At that time news of Jesus came to Herod the king;
1 At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus.
2 And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has come back from the dead, and so these powers are working in him.
2 "He is really John the Baptist, who has come back to life," he told his officials. "That is why he has this power to perform miracles."
3 For Herod had taken John and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
3 For Herod had earlier ordered John's arrest, and he had him tied up and put in prison. He had done this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
4 Because John had said to him, It is not right for you to have her.
4 For some time John the Baptist had told Herod, "It isn't right for you to be married to Herodias!"
5 And he would have put him to death, but for his fear of the people, because in their eyes John was a prophet.
5 Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the Jewish people, because they considered John to be a prophet.
6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias was dancing before them, and Herod was pleased with her.
6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced in front of the whole group. Herod was so pleased
7 So he gave her his word with an oath to let her have whatever she might make request for.
7 that he promised her, "I swear that I will give you anything you ask for!"
8 And she, at her mother's suggestion, said, Give me here on a plate the head of John the Baptist.
8 At her mother's suggestion she asked him, "Give me here and now the head of John the Baptist on a plate!"
9 And the king was sad; but because of his oaths and because of his guests, he gave the order for it to be given to her;
9 The king was sad, but because of the promise he had made in front of all his guests he gave orders that her wish be granted.
10 And he sent and had John's head cut off in the prison.
10 So he had John beheaded in prison.
11 And his head was put on a plate and given to the girl; and she took it to her mother.
11 The head was brought in on a plate and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
12 And his disciples came, and took up his body and put it in the earth; and they went and gave Jesus news of what had taken place.
12 John's disciples came, carried away his body, and buried it; then they went and told Jesus.
13 Now when it came to the ears of Jesus, he went away from there in a boat, to a waste place by himself: and the people hearing of it, went after him on foot from the towns.
13 When Jesus heard the news about John, he left there in a boat and went to a lonely place by himself. The people heard about it, and so they left their towns and followed him by land.
14 And he came out and saw a great number of people and he had pity on them, and made well those of them who were ill.
14 Jesus got out of the boat, and when he saw the large crowd, his heart was filled with pity for them, and he healed their sick.
15 And when evening had come, the disciples came to him, saying, This place is waste land, and the time is now past; send the people away so that they may go into the towns and get themselves food.
15 That evening his disciples came to him and said, "It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. Send the people away and let them go to the villages to buy food for themselves."
16 But Jesus said to them, There is no need for them to go away; give them food yourselves.
16 "They don't have to leave," answered Jesus. "You yourselves give them something to eat!"
17 And they say to him, We have here but five cakes of bread and two fishes.
17 "All we have here are five loaves and two fish," they replied.
18 And he said, Give them to me.
18 "Then bring them here to me," Jesus said.
19 And he gave orders for the people to be seated on the grass; and he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing, and made division of the food, and gave it to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people.
19 He ordered the people to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 And they all took of the food and had enough: and they took up twelve baskets full of broken bits which were not used.
20 Everyone ate and had enough. Then the disciples took up twelve baskets full of what was left over.
21 And those who had food were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
21 The number of men who ate was about five thousand, not counting the women and children.
22 And straight away he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, till he had sent the people away.
22 Then Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people away.
23 And after he had sent the people away, he went up into the mountain by himself for prayer: and when evening was come, he was there by himself.
23 After sending the people away, he went up a hill by himself to pray. When evening came, Jesus was there alone;
24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, and was troubled by the waves: for the wind was against them.
24 and by this time the boat was far out in the lake, tossed about by the waves, because the wind was blowing against it.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
25 Between three and six o'clock in the morning Jesus came to the disciples, walking on the water.
26 And when they saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they gave cries of fear.
26 When they saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and screamed with fear.
27 But straight away Jesus said to them, Take heart; it is I, have no fear.
27 Jesus spoke to them at once. "Courage!" he said. "It is I. Don't be afraid!"
28 And Peter, answering, said to him, Lord, if it is you, give me the order to come to you on the water.
28 Then Peter spoke up. "Lord, if it is really you, order me to come out on the water to you."
29 And he said, Come. And Peter got out of the boat, and walking on the water, went to Jesus.
29 "Come!" answered Jesus. So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind he was in fear and, starting to go down, he gave a cry, saying, Help, Lord.
30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he was afraid and started to sink down in the water. "Save me, Lord!" he cried.
31 And straight away Jesus put out his hand and took a grip of him, and said to him, O man of little faith, why were you in doubt?
31 At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, "What little faith you have! Why did you doubt?"
32 And when they had got into the boat, the wind went down.
32 They both got into the boat, and the wind died down.
33 And those who were in the boat gave him worship, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.
33 Then the disciples in the boat worshiped Jesus. "Truly you are the Son of God!" they exclaimed.
34 And when they had gone across, they came to land at Gennesaret.
34 They crossed the lake and came to land at Gennesaret,
35 And when the men of that place had news of him, they sent into all the country round about, and took to him all who were ill,
35 where the people recognized Jesus. So they sent for the sick people in all the surrounding country and brought them to Jesus.
36 With the request that they might only put their hands on the edge of his robe: and all those who did so were made well.
36 They begged him to let the sick at least touch the edge of his cloak; and all who touched it were made well.
