Matthew 15:10-28

CEB 10 Jesus called the crowd near and said to them, "Listen and understand. NRS 10 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, "Listen and understand: CEB 11 It's not what goes into the mouth that contaminates a person in God's sight. It's what comes out of the mouth that contaminates the person." NRS 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles." CEB 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended by what you just said?" NRS 12 Then the disciples approached and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?" CEB 13 Jesus replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father didn't plant will be pulled up. NRS 13 He answered, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. CEB 14 Leave the Pharisees alone. They are blind people who are guides to blind people. But if a blind person leads another blind person, they will both fall into a ditch." NRS 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit." CEB 15 Then Peter spoke up, "Explain this riddle to us." NRS 15 But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us." CEB 16 Jesus said, "Don't you understand yet? NRS 16 Then he said, "Are you also still without understanding? CEB 17 Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth enters the stomach and goes out into the sewer? NRS 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? CEB 18 But what goes out of the mouth comes from the heart. And that's what contaminates a person in God's sight. NRS 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. CEB 19 Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adultery, sexual sins, thefts, false testimonies, and insults. NRS 19 For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. CEB 20 These contaminate a person in God's sight. But eating without washing hands doesn't contaminate in God's sight." NRS 20 These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile." CEB 21 From there, Jesus went to the regions of Tyre and Sidon. NRS 21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. CEB 22 A Canaanite woman from those territories came out and shouted, "Show me mercy, Son of David. My daughter is suffering terribly from demon possession." NRS 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon." CEB 23 But he didn't respond to her at all. His disciples came and urged him, "Send her away; she keeps shouting out after us." NRS 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us." CEB 24 Jesus replied, "I've been sent only to the lost sheep, the people of Israel." NRS 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." CEB 25 But she knelt before him and said, "Lord, help me." NRS 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." CEB 26 He replied, "It is not good to take the children's bread and toss it to dogs." NRS 26 He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." CEB 27 She said, "Yes, Lord. But even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall off their masters' table." NRS 27 She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." CEB 28 Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith. It will be just as you wish." And right then her daughter was healed. NRS 28 Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly.
