1 “For the Kingdom of Heaven is like the landowner who went out early one morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 He agreed to pay the normal daily wage and sent them out to work.

After he agreed with the workers to pay them a denarion, he sent them into his vineyard.
3 “At nine o’clock in the morning he was passing through the marketplace and saw some people standing around doing nothing.

“Then he went out around nine in the morning and saw others standing around the marketplace doing nothing.
4 So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day.

He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I'll pay you whatever is right.'
5 So they went to work in the vineyard. At noon and again at three o’clock he did the same thing.

And they went. “Again around noon and then at three in the afternoon, he did the same thing.
6 “At five o’clock that afternoon he was in town again and saw some more people standing around. He asked them, ‘Why haven’t you been working today?’

Around five in the afternoon he went and found others standing around, and he said to them, ‘Why are you just standing around here doing nothing all day long?'
7 “They replied, ‘Because no one hired us.’ “The landowner told them, ‘Then go out and join the others in my vineyard.’

“‘Because nobody has hired us,' they replied. “He responded, ‘You also go into the vineyard.'
8 “That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first.

“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and give them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and moving on finally to the first.'
9 When those hired at five o’clock were paid, each received a full day’s wage.

When those who were hired at five in the afternoon came, each one received a denarion.
10 When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage.

Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each of them also received a denarion.
11 When they received their pay, they protested to the owner,

When they received it, they grumbled against the landowner,
12 ‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’

‘These who were hired last worked one hour, and they received the same pay as we did even though we had to work the whole day in the hot sun.'
13 “He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage?

"But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I did you no wrong. Didn't I agree to pay you a denarion?
14 Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you.

Take what belongs to you and go. I want to give to this one who was hired last the same as I give to you.
15 Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?’

Don't I have the right to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you resentful because I'm generous?'
16 “So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”

So those who are last will be first. And those who are first will be last."
17 As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside privately and told them what was going to happen to him.

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the Twelve aside by themselves on the road. He told them,
18 “Listen,” he said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die.

"Look, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Human One will be handed over to the chief priests and legal experts. They will condemn him to death.
19 Then they will hand him over to the Romans to be mocked, flogged with a whip, and crucified. But on the third day he will be raised from the dead.”

They will hand him over to the Gentiles to be ridiculed, tortured, and crucified. But he will be raised on the third day."
20 Then the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus with her sons. She knelt respectfully to ask a favor.

Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus along with her sons. Bowing before him, she asked a favor of him.
21 “What is your request?” he asked. She replied, “In your Kingdom, please let my two sons sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.”

"What do you want?" he asked. She responded, "Say that these two sons of mine will sit, one on your right hand and one on your left, in your kingdom."
22 But Jesus answered by saying to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?” “Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!”

Jesus replied, "You don't know what you're asking! Can you drink from the cup that I'm about to drink from?" They said to him, "We can."
23 Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”

He said to them, "You will drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left hand isn't mine to give. It belongs to those for whom my Father prepared it."
24 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.

Now when the other ten disciples heard about this, they became angry with the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.

But Jesus called them over and said, "You know that those who rule the Gentiles show off their authority over them and their high-ranking officials order them around.
26 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,

But that's not the way it will be with you. Whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant.
27 and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave.

Whoever wants to be first among you will be your slave—
28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

just as the Human One didn't come to be served but rather to serve and to give his life to liberate many people."
29 As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind.

As Jesus and his disciples were going out of Jericho a large crowd followed him.
30 Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

When two blind men sitting along the road heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Show us mercy, Lord, Son of David!"
31 “Be quiet!” the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

Now the crowd scolded them and told them to be quiet. But they shouted even louder, "Show us mercy, Lord, Son of David!"
32 When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, “What do you want me to do for you?”

Jesus stopped in his tracks and called to them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
33 “Lord,” they said, “we want to see!”

"Lord, we want to see," they replied.
34 Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him.

Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they were able to see, and they followed him.
