Matthew 21:1-27

CSB 1 When they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, Jesus then sent two disciples, NIV 1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, CSB 2 telling them, "Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to Me. He overturned the money changers' tables and the chairs of those selling doves. NIV 12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. CSB 13 And He said to them, "It is written, My house will be called a house of prayer. But you are making it a den of thieves !" NIV 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” CSB 14 The blind and the lame came to Him in the temple complex, and He healed them. CSB 15 When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that He did and the children in the temple complex cheering, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant NIV 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. CSB 16 and said to Him, "Do You hear what these [children] are saying?" "Yes," Jesus told them. "Have you never read: You have prepared praise from the mouths of children and nursing infants "? NIV 16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “ ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?” CSB 17 Then He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there. NIV 17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night. CSB 18 Early in the morning, as He was returning to the city, He was hungry. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. CSB 20 When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" CSB 21 Jesus answered them, "I assure you: If you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will be done. NIV 21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. CSB 22 And if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." NIV 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” CSB 23 When He entered the temple complex, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to Him as He was teaching and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? Who gave You this authority?" NIV 23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?” CSB 24 Jesus answered them, "I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for Me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. NIV 24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. CSB 25 Where did John's baptism come from? From heaven or from men?" They began to argue among themselves, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' NIV 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ CSB 26 But if we say, 'From men,' we're afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought John was a prophet." NIV 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” CSB 27 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. NIV 27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
