1 And Jesus went out of the Temple, and on the way his disciples came to him, pointing out the buildings of the Temple.
1 Jesus left and was going away from the Temple when his disciples came to him to call his attention to its buildings.
2 But he, answering, said to them, See you not all these things? truly I say to you that here there will not be one stone resting on another, which will not be pulled down.
2 "Yes," he said, "you may well look at all these. I tell you this: not a single stone here will be left in its place; every one of them will be thrown down."
3 And while he was seated on the Mountain of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, Make clear to us, when will these things be? and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the world?
3 As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him in private. "Tell us when all this will be," they asked, "and what will happen to show that it is the time for your coming and the end of the age."
4 And Jesus said to them in answer, Take care that you are not tricked.
4 Jesus answered, "Watch out, and do not let anyone fool you.
5 For people will come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and a number will be turned from the true way through them.
5 Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, "I am the Messiah!' and they will fool many people.
6 And news will come to you of wars and talk of wars: do not be troubled, for these things have to be; but it is still not the end.
6 You are going to hear the noise of battles close by and the news of battles far away; but do not be troubled. Such things must happen, but they do not mean that the end has come.
7 For nation will be moved against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and men will be without food, and the earth will be shaking in different places;
7 Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. There will be famines and earthquakes everywhere.
8 But all these things are the first of the troubles.
8 All these things are like the first pains of childbirth.
9 Then they will be cruel to you, and will put you to death: and you will be hated by all nations because of my name.
9 "Then you will be arrested and handed over to be punished and be put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me.
10 And numbers of people will be turned from the right way, and will give one another up and have hate for one another.
10 Many will give up their faith at that time; they will betray one another and hate one another.
11 And a number of false prophets will come, causing error.
11 Then many false prophets will appear and fool many people.
12 And because wrongdoing will be increased, the love of most people will become cold.
12 Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold.
13 But he who goes through to the end will get salvation.
13 But whoever holds out to the end will be saved.
14 And this good news of the kingdom will be given through all the world for a witness to all nations; and then the end will come.
14 And this Good News about the Kingdom will be preached through all the world for a witness to all people; and then the end will come.
15 When, then, you see in the holy place the unclean thing which makes destruction, of which word was given by Daniel the prophet (let this be clear to the reader),
15 "You will see "The Awful Horror' of which the prophet Daniel spoke. It will be standing in the holy place." (Note to the reader: understand what this means!)
16 Then let those who are in Judaea go in flight to the mountains:
16 "Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills.
17 Let not him who is on the house-top go down to take anything out of his house:
17 Someone who is on the roof of a house must not take the time to go down and get any belongings from the house.
18 And let not him who is in the field go back to get his coat.
18 Someone who is in the field must not go back to get a cloak.
19 But it will be hard for women who are with child and for those with babies at the breast in those days.
19 How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies!
20 And say a prayer that your flight may not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath.
20 Pray to God that you will not have to run away during the winter or on a Sabbath!
21 Because in those days there will be great sorrow, such as there has not been from the start of the world till now, or ever will be.
21 For the trouble at that time will be far more terrible than any there has ever been, from the beginning of the world to this very day. Nor will there ever be anything like it again.
22 And if those days had not been made short there would have been no salvation for any, but because of the saints those days will be made short.
22 But God has already reduced the number of days; had he not done so, nobody would survive. For the sake of his chosen people, however, God will reduce the days.
23 Then if any man says to you, See, here is the Christ, or, Here; do not put faith in him;
23 "Then, if anyone says to you, "Look, here is the Messiah!' or "There he is!' - do not believe it.
24 For there will come up false Christs, and false prophets, who will do great signs and wonders; so that if possible even the saints might be tricked.
24 For false Messiahs and false prophets will appear; they will perform great miracles and wonders in order to deceive even God's chosen people, if possible.
25 See, I have made it clear to you before it comes about.
25 Listen! I have told you this ahead of time.
26 If, then, they say to you, See, he is in the waste land; go not out: See, he is in the inner rooms; put no faith in it.
26 "Or, if people should tell you, "Look, he is out in the desert!' - don't go there; or if they say, "Look, he is hiding here!' - don't believe it.
27 Because as in a thunderstorm the bright light coming from the east is seen even in the west; so will be the coming of the Son of man.
27 For the Son of Man will come like the lightning which flashes across the whole sky from the east to the west.
28 Wherever the dead body is, there will the eagles come together.
28 "Wherever there is a dead body, the vultures will gather.
29 But straight away, after the trouble of those days, the sun will be made dark and the moon will not give her light and the stars will come down from heaven and the powers of heaven will be moved:
29 "Soon after the trouble of those days, the sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers in space will be driven from their courses.
30 And then the sign of the Son of man will be seen in heaven: and then all the nations of the earth will have sorrow, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky; and all the peoples of earth will weep as they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31 And he will send out his angels with a great sound of a horn, and they will get his saints together from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
31 The great trumpet will sound, and he will send out his angels to the four corners of the earth, and they will gather his chosen people from one end of the world to the other.
32 Now take an example from the fig-tree: when her branch has become soft and puts out its leaves, you are certain that the summer is near;
32 "Let the fig tree teach you a lesson. When its branches become green and tender and it starts putting out leaves, you know that summer is near.
33 Even so, when you see all these things, you may be certain that he is near, even at the doors.
33 In the same way, when you see all these things, you will know that the time is near, ready to begin.
34 Truly I say to you, This generation will not come to an end till all these things are complete.
34 Remember that all these things will happen before the people now living have all died.
35 Heaven and earth will come to an end, but my words will not come to an end.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
36 But of that day and hour no one has knowledge, not even the angels in heaven, or the Son, but the Father only.
36 "No one knows, however, when that day and hour will come - neither the angels in heaven nor the Son; the Father alone knows.
37 And as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man.
37 The coming of the Son of Man will be like what happened in the time of Noah.
38 Because as in those days before the overflowing of the waters, they were feasting and taking wives and getting married, till the day when Noah went into the ark,
38 In the days before the flood people ate and drank, men and women married, up to the very day Noah went into the boat;
39 And they had no care till the waters came and took them all away; so will be the coming of the Son of man.
39 yet they did not realize what was happening until the flood came and swept them all away. That is how it will be when the Son of Man comes.
40 Then two men will be in the field; one is taken, and one let go;
40 At that time two men will be working in a field: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind.
41 Two women will be crushing grain; one is taken, and one let go.
41 Two women will be at a mill grinding meal: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind.
42 Be watching, then! for you have no knowledge on what day your Lord will come.
42 Watch out, then, because you do not know what day your Lord will come.
43 But be certain of this, that if the master of the house had had knowledge of the time when the thief was coming, he would have been watching, and would not have let his house be broken into.
43 If the owner of a house knew the time when the thief would come, you can be sure that he would stay awake and not let the thief break into his house.
44 Be ready then; for at a time which you have no thought of the Son of man will come.
44 So then, you also must always be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him.
45 Who is the true and wise servant, whom his lord has put over those in his house, to give them their food at the right time?
45 "Who, then, is a faithful and wise servant? It is the one that his master has placed in charge of the other servants to give them their food at the proper time.
46 A blessing on that servant, who will be doing so when his lord comes.
46 How happy that servant is if his master finds him doing this when he comes home!
47 Truly, I say to you, he will put him over all he has.
47 Indeed, I tell you, the master will put that servant in charge of all his property.
48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, My lord is a long time in coming;
48 But if he is a bad servant, he will tell himself that his master will not come back for a long time,
49 And is cruel to the other servants, taking his pleasure with those who are overcome with wine;
49 and he will begin to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.
50 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he is not looking for him, and in an hour of which he has no knowledge,
50 Then that servant's master will come back one day when the servant does not expect him and at a time he does not know.
51 And will have him cut in two, and will give him a part in the fate of the false ones: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow.
51 The master will cut him in pieces and make him share the fate of the hypocrites. There he will cry and gnash his teeth.
