Matthew 25:1-13

NLT

MSG

1 “Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
1 "God's kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom.
2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
2 Five were silly and five were smart.
3 The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps,
3 The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil.
4 but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil.
4 The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps.
5 When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
5 The bridegroom didn't show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep.
6 “At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’
6 "In the middle of the night someone yelled out, 'He's here! The bridegroom's here! Go out and greet him!'
7 “All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps.
7 "The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready.
8 Then the five foolish ones asked the others, ‘Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.’
8 The silly virgins said to the smart ones, 'Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.'
9 “But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’
9 "They answered, 'There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.'
10 “But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked.
10 "They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked.
11 Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’
11 "Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, 'Master, we're here. Let us in.'
12 “But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’
12 "He answered, 'Do I know you? I don't think I know you.'
13 “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.
13 "So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.
