The Darby Translation DBY
GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 Judge not, that ye may not be judged;
1
"Stop judging so that you will not be judged.
2 for with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you.
2
Otherwise, you will be judged by the same standard you use to judge others. The standards you use for others will be applied to you.
3 But why lookest thou on the mote that is in the eye of thy brother, but observest not the beam that is in thine eye?
3
So why do you see the piece of sawdust in another believer's eye and not notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Allow [me], I will cast out the mote from thine eye; and behold, the beam is in thine eye?
4
How can you say to another believer, 'Let me take the piece of sawdust out of your eye,' when you have a beam in your own eye?
5 Hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine eye, and then thou wilt see clearly to cast out the mote out of the eye of thy brother.
5
You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye. Then you will see clearly to remove the piece of sawdust from another believer's eye.
6 Give not that which is holy to the dogs, nor cast your pearls before the swine, lest they trample them with their feet, and turning round rend you.
6
"Don't give what is holy to dogs or throw your pearls to pigs. Otherwise, they will trample them and then tear you to pieces.
7 Ask, and it shall be given to you. Seek, and ye shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened to you.
7
"Ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you.
8 For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.
8
Everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find, and for the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you who, if his son shall ask of him a loaf of bread, will give him a stone;
9
"If your child asks you for bread, would any of you give him a stone?
10 and if he ask a fish, will give him a serpent?
10
Or if your child asks for a fish, would you give him a snake?
11 If therefore *ye*, being wicked, know [how] to give good gifts to your children, how much rather shall your Father who is in the heavens give good things to them that ask of him?
11
Even though you're evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. So how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him?
12 Therefore all things whatever ye desire that men should do to you, thus do *ye* also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.
12
"Always do for other people everything you want them to do for you. That is [the meaning of] Moses' Teachings and the Prophets.
13 Enter in through the narrow gate, for wide the gate and broad the way that leads to destruction, and many are they who enter in through it.
13
"Enter through the narrow gate because the gate and road that lead to destruction are wide. Many enter through the wide gate.
14 For narrow the gate and straitened the way that leads to life, and they are few who find it.
14
But the narrow gate and the road that lead to life are full of trouble. Only a few people find the narrow gate.
15 But beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but within are ravening wolves.
15
"Beware of false prophets. They come to you disguised as sheep, but in their hearts they are vicious wolves.
16 By their fruits ye shall know them. Do [men] gather a bunch of grapes from thorns, or from thistles figs?
16
You will know them by what they produce. "People don't pick grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles, do they?
17 So every good tree produces good fruits, but the worthless tree produces bad fruits.
17
In the same way every good tree produces good fruit, but a rotten tree produces bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruits, nor a worthless tree produce good fruits.
18
A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a rotten tree cannot produce good fruit.
19 Every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.
19
Any tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into a fire.
20 By their fruits then surely ye shall know them.
20
So you will know them by what they produce.
21 Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but he that does the will of my Father who is in the heavens.
21
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord!' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the person who does what my Father in heaven wants.
22 Many shall say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied through *thy* name, and through *thy* name cast out demons, and through *thy* name done many works of power?
22
Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name? Didn't we force out demons and do many miracles by the power and authority of your name?'
23 and then will I avow unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me, workers of lawlessness.
23
Then I will tell them publicly, 'I've never known you. Get away from me, you evil people.'
24 Whoever therefore hears these my words and does them, I will liken him to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock;
24
"Therefore, everyone who hears what I say and obeys it will be like a wise person who built a house on rock.
25 and the rain came down, and the streams came, and the winds blew and fell upon that house, and it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock.
25
Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not collapse, because its foundation was on rock.
26 And every one who hears these my words and does not do them, he shall be likened to a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand;
26
"Everyone who hears what I say but doesn't obey it will be like a foolish person who built a house on sand.
27 and the rain came down, and the streams came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell, and its fall was great.
27
Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and struck that house. It collapsed, and the result was a total disaster."
28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his doctrine,
28
When Jesus finished this speech, the crowds were amazed at his teachings.
29 for he taught them as having authority, and not as their scribes.
29
Unlike their scribes, he taught them with authority.
