GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 "Judge not, that ye be not judged.
1
"Stop judging so that you will not be judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
2
Otherwise, you will be judged by the same standard you use to judge others. The standards you use for others will be applied to you.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
3
So why do you see the piece of sawdust in another believer's eye and not notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, `Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye,' and behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
4
How can you say to another believer, 'Let me take the piece of sawdust out of your eye,' when you have a beam in your own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
5
You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye. Then you will see clearly to remove the piece of sawdust from another believer's eye.
6 "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
6
"Don't give what is holy to dogs or throw your pearls to pigs. Otherwise, they will trample them and then tear you to pieces.
7 "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
7
"Ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you.
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
8
Everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find, and for the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 "Or what man is there among you whom, if his son ask for bread, will give him a stone?
9
"If your child asks you for bread, would any of you give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask for a fish, will give him a serpent?
10
Or if your child asks for a fish, would you give him a snake?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in Heaven give good things to them that ask Him?
11
Even though you're evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. So how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him?
12 Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets.
12
"Always do for other people everything you want them to do for you. That is [the meaning of] Moses' Teachings and the Prophets.
13 "Enter ye in at the strait gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be who go in thereat.
13
"Enter through the narrow gate because the gate and road that lead to destruction are wide. Many enter through the wide gate.
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
14
But the narrow gate and the road that lead to life are full of trouble. Only a few people find the narrow gate.
15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
15
"Beware of false prophets. They come to you disguised as sheep, but in their hearts they are vicious wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
16
You will know them by what they produce. "People don't pick grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles, do they?
17 Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
17
In the same way every good tree produces good fruit, but a rotten tree produces bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
18
A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a rotten tree cannot produce good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.
19
Any tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into a fire.
20 Therefore, by their fruits ye shall know them.
20
So you will know them by what they produce.
21 "Not every one that saith unto Me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he that doeth the will of My Father who is in Heaven.
21
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord!' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the person who does what my Father in heaven wants.
22 Many will say to Me in that Day, `Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name, and in Thy name have cast out devils, and in Thy name done many wonderful works?'
22
Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name? Didn't we force out demons and do many miracles by the power and authority of your name?'
23 And then will I profess unto them, `I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.'
23
Then I will tell them publicly, 'I've never known you. Get away from me, you evil people.'
24 "Therefore, whosoever heareth these sayings of Mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock.
24
"Therefore, everyone who hears what I say and obeys it will be like a wise person who built a house on rock.
25 And the rain descended and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house; and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.
25
Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not collapse, because its foundation was on rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of Mine and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand;
26
"Everyone who hears what I say but doesn't obey it will be like a foolish person who built a house on sand.
27 and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell, and great was the fall of it."
27
Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and struck that house. It collapsed, and the result was a total disaster."
28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at His doctrine;
28
When Jesus finished this speech, the crowds were amazed at his teachings.
29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
29
Unlike their scribes, he taught them with authority.
