GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him.
1
When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him.
2 And behold, there came a leper and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean."
2
A man with a serious skin disease came and bowed down in front of him. The man said to Jesus, "Sir, if you're willing, you can make me clean."
3 And Jesus put forth His hand and touched him, saying, "I will: be thou clean." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
3
Jesus reached out, touched him, and said, "I'm willing. So be clean!" Immediately, his skin disease went away, and he was clean.
4 And Jesus said unto him, "See thou tell no man; but go thy way, show thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded for a testimony unto them."
4
Jesus said to him, "Don't tell anyone about this! Instead, show yourself to the priest. Then offer the sacrifice Moses commanded as proof to people that you are clean."
5 And when Jesus had entered into Capernaum, there came unto Him a centurion, beseeching Him
5
When Jesus went to Capernaum, a Roman army officer came to beg him for help.
6 and saying, "Lord, my servant lieth at home sick with the palsy and grievously tormented."
6
The officer said, "Sir, my servant is lying at home paralyzed and in terrible pain."
7 And Jesus said unto him, "I will come and heal him."
7
Jesus said to him, "I'll come to heal him."
8 The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldest come under my roof. But speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
8
The officer responded, "Sir, I don't deserve to have you come into my house. But just give a command, and my servant will be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this man, `Go!' and he goeth; and to another, `Come!' and he cometh; and to my servant, `Do this!' and he doeth it."
9
As you know, I'm in a chain of command and have soldiers at my command. I tell one of them, 'Go!' and he goes, and another, 'Come!' and he comes. I tell my servant, 'Do this!' and he does it."
10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled and said to those who followed, "Verily I say unto you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.
10
Jesus was amazed when he heard this. He said to those who were following him, "I can guarantee this truth: I haven't found faith as great as this in anyone in Israel.
11 And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven.
11
I can guarantee that many will come from all over the world. They will eat with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
12
The citizens of that kingdom will be thrown outside into the darkness. People will cry and be in extreme pain there.
13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, "Go thy way, and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee." And his servant was healed in that selfsame hour.
13
Jesus told the officer, "Go! What you believed will be done for you." And at that moment the servant was healed.
14 And when Jesus had come into Peter's house, He saw his wife's mother lying and sick with a fever.
14
When Jesus went to Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law in bed with a fever.
15 And He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose and ministered unto them.
15
Jesus touched her hand, and the fever went away. So she got up and prepared a meal for him.
16 When the evening had come, they brought unto Him many who were possessed with devils, and He cast out the spirits with His word and healed all who were sick,
16
In the evening the people brought him many who were possessed by demons. He forced the [evil] spirits out of people with a command and cured everyone who was sick.
17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, who said, "He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses."
17
So what the prophet Isaiah had said came true: "He took away our weaknesses and removed our diseases."
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
18
Now, when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he ordered [his disciples] to cross to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
19 And a certain scribe came and said unto Him, "Master, I will follow Thee whithersoever Thou goest."
19
A scribe came to him and said, "Teacher, I'll follow you wherever you go."
20 And Jesus said unto him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath nowhere to lay His head."
20
Jesus told him, "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to sleep."
21 And another of His disciples said unto Him, "Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father."
21
Another disciple said to him, "Sir, first let me go to bury my father."
22 But Jesus said unto him, "Follow Me, and let the dead bury their dead."
22
But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
23 And when He had entered into a boat, His disciples followed Him.
23
Jesus' disciples went with him as he left in a boat.
24 And behold, there arose a great tempest on the sea, insomuch that the boat was covered with the waves; but He was asleep.
24
Suddenly, a severe storm came across the sea. The waves were covering the boat. Yet, Jesus was sleeping.
25 And His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, "Lord, save us! We perish!"
25
So they woke him up, saying, "Lord! Save us! We're going to die!"
26 And He said unto them, "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?" Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
26
Jesus said to them, "Why do you cowards have so little faith?" Then he got up, gave an order to the wind and the sea, and the sea became very calm.
27 But the men marveled, saying, "What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?"
27
The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"
28 And when He had come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
28
When he arrived in the territory of the Gadarenes on the other side [of the Sea of Galilee], two men met him. They were possessed by demons and had come out of the tombs. No one could travel along that road because the men were so dangerous.
29 And behold, they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of God? Art Thou come hither to torment us before the time?"
29
They shouted, "Why are you bothering us now, Son of God? Did you come here to torture us before it is time?"
30 Now there was a good way off from them a herd of many swine feeding.
30
A large herd of pigs was feeding in the distance.
31 So the devils besought Him, saying, "If Thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine."
31
The demons begged Jesus, "If you're going to force us out, send us into that herd of pigs."
32 And He said to them, "Go." And when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine, and behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea and perished in the waters.
32
Jesus said to them, "Go!" The demons came out and went into the pigs. Suddenly, the whole herd rushed down the cliff into the sea and died in the water.
33 And those who kept them fled and went their ways into the city, and told everything and what had befallen the ones possessed with the devils.
33
Those who took care of the pigs ran into the city. There they reported everything, especially about the men possessed by demons.
34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they besought Him that He would depart out of their borders.
34
Everyone from the city went to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their territory.
