New International Version NIV
1 When the wall had been rebuilt and I had the doors installed, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
1
After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the Levites were appointed.
2 Then I put my brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem, along with Hananiah, commander of the fortress, because he was a faithful man who feared God more than most.
2
I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do.
3 I said to them, "Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes."
3
I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.”
4 The city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and no houses had been built yet.
4
Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.
5 Then my God put it into my mind to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be registered by genealogy. I found the genealogical record of those who came back first, and I found [the following] written in it:
5
So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:
6 These are the people of the province who went up from among the captive exiles deported by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Each of them returned to his own town in Jerusalem and Judah.
6

61 The following are those who came from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but were unable to prove that their families and ancestry were Israelite:
61
The following came up from the towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon and Immer, but they could not show that their families were descended from Israel:
62 Delaiah's descendants, Tobiah's descendants, and Nekoda's descendants 642

63 and from the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, and the descendants of Barzillai-who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name.
63
And from among the priests:
64 These searched for their entries in the genealogical records, but they could not be found, so they were disqualified from the priesthood.
64
These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.
65 The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest who could consult the Urim and Thummim.
65
The governor, therefore, ordered them not to eat any of the most sacred food until there should be a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim.
66 The whole combined assembly numbered 42,360
66
The whole company numbered 42,360,
67 not including their 7,337 male and female slaves, as well as their 245 male and female singers.
67
besides their 7,337 male and female slaves; and they also had 245 male and female singers.
