HNV 1 Yisra'el abode in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Mo'av: NIV 1 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, HNV 2 for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods. NIV 2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. HNV 3 Yisra'el joined himself to Ba`al-Pe`or: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Yisra'el. NIV 3 So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the LORD’s anger burned against them. HNV 4 The LORD said to Moshe, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to the LORD before the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Yisra'el. NIV 4 The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORD’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.” HNV 5 Moshe said to the judges of Yisra'el, Kill you everyone his men who have joined themselves to Ba`al-Pe`or. NIV 5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.” HNV 6 Behold, one of the children of Yisra'el came and brought to his brothers a Midyanite woman in the sight of Moshe, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting. NIV 6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. HNV 7 When Pinechas, the son of El`azar, the son of Aharon the Kohen, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand; NIV 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand HNV 8 and he went after the man of Yisra'el into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Yisra'el, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Yisra'el. NIV 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; HNV 9 Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand. NIV 9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000. HNV 10 The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, NIV 10 The LORD said to Moses, HNV 11 Pinechas, the son of El`azar, the son of Aharon the Kohen, has turned my wrath away from the children of Yisra'el, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn't consume the children of Yisra'el in my jealousy. NIV 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. HNV 12 Therefore say, Behold, I give to him my covenant of shalom: NIV 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. HNV 13 and it shall be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Yisra'el. NIV 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.” HNV 14 Now the name of the man of Yisra'el that was slain, who was slain with the Midyanite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Shim`oni. NIV 14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. HNV 15 The name of the Midyanite woman who was slain was Kozbi, the daughter of Tzur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midyan. NIV 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family. HNV 16 The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, NIV 16 The LORD said to Moses, HNV 17 Vex the Midyanim, and strike them; NIV 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. HNV 18 for they vex you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Pe`or, and in the matter of Kozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midyan, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Pe`or. NIV 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
