Numbers 35

LXX 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses to the west of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying, NIV 1 On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, the LORD said to Moses, LXX 2 Give orders to the children of Israel, and they shall give to the Levites cities to dwell in from the lot of their possession, and they shall give to the Levites the suburbs of the cities round about them. NIV 2 “Command the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. And give them pasturelands around the towns. LXX 3 And the cities shall be for them to dwell in, and their enclosures shall be for their cattle and all their beasts. NIV 3 Then they will have towns to live in and pasturelands for the cattle they own and all their other animals. LXX 4 And the suburbs of the cities which ye shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outwards two thousand cubits round about. NIV 4 “The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits from the town wall. LXX 5 And thou shalt measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and your city shall be in the midst of this, and the suburbs of the cities . NIV 5 Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits on the east side, two thousand on the south side, two thousand on the west and two thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns. LXX 6 And ye shall give the cities to the Levites, the six cities of refuge which ye shall give for the slayer to flee thither, and in addition to these, forty-two cities. NIV 6 “Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. In addition, give them forty-two other towns. LXX 7 Ye shall give to the Levites in all forty-eight cities, them and their suburbs. NIV 7 In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands. LXX 8 And as for the cities which ye shall give out of the possession of the children of Israel, from those much much, and from those that have less ye shall give less: they shall give of their cities to the Levites each one according to his inheritance which they shall inherit. NIV 8 The towns you give the Levites from the land the Israelites possess are to be given in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: Take many towns from a tribe that has many, but few from one that has few.” LXX 9 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 9 Then the LORD said to Moses: LXX 10 Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Ye are to cross over Jordan into the land of Chanaan. NIV 10 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you cross the Jordan into Canaan, LXX 11 And ye shall appoint to yourselves cities: they shall be to you cities of refuge for the slayer to flee to, every one who has killed another unintentionally. NIV 11 select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee. LXX 12 And the cities shall be to you places of refuge from the avenger of blood, and the slayer shall not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment. NIV 12 They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that anyone accused of murder may not die before they stand trial before the assembly. LXX 13 And the cities which ye shall assign, the six cities, shall be places of refuge for you. NIV 13 These six towns you give will be your cities of refuge. LXX 14 Ye shall assign three cities on the other side of Jordan, and ye shall assign three cities in the land of Chanaan. NIV 14 Give three on this side of the Jordan and three in Canaan as cities of refuge. LXX 15 It shall be a place of refuge for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for him that sojourns among you; these cities shall be for a place of refuge, for every one to flee thither who has killed a man unintentionally. NIV 15 These six towns will be a place of refuge for Israelites and for foreigners residing among them, so that anyone who has killed another accidentally can flee there. LXX 16 And if he should smite him with an iron instrument, and the man should die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death. NIV 16 “ ‘If anyone strikes someone a fatal blow with an iron object, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. LXX 17 And if he should smite him with a stone from his hand, whereby a man may die, and he die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death. NIV 17 Or if anyone is holding a stone and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. LXX 18 And if he should smite him with an instrument of wood from his hand, whereby he may die, and he die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death. NIV 18 Or if anyone is holding a wooden object and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. LXX 19 The avenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: whensoever he shall meet him he shall slay him. NIV 19 The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when the avenger comes upon the murderer, the avenger shall put the murderer to death. LXX 20 And if he should thrust him through enmity, or cast any thing upon him from an ambuscade, and the man should die, NIV 20 If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at them intentionally so that they die LXX 21 or if he have smitten him with his hand through anger, and the man should die, let the man that smote him be put to death by all means, he is a murderer: let the murderer by all means be put to death: the avenger of blood shall slay the murderer when he meets him. NIV 21 or if out of enmity one person hits another with their fist so that the other dies, that person is to be put to death; that person is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when they meet. LXX 22 But if he should thrust him suddenly, not through enmity, or cast any thing upon him, not from an ambuscade, NIV 22 “ ‘But if without enmity someone suddenly pushes another or throws something at them unintentionally LXX 23 or with any stone, whereby a man may die, unawares, and it should fall upon him, and he should die, but he was not his enemy, nor sought to hurt him; NIV 23 or, without seeing them, drops on them a stone heavy enough to kill them, and they die, then since that other person was not an enemy and no harm was intended, LXX 24 then the assembly shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood, according to these judgments. NIV 24 the assembly must judge between the accused and the avenger of blood according to these regulations. LXX 25 And the congregation shall rescue the slayer from the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, whither he fled for refuge; and he shall dwell there till the death of the high-priest, whom they anointed with the holy oil. NIV 25 The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send the accused back to the city of refuge to which they fled. The accused must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. LXX 26 But if the slayer should in any wise go out beyond the bounds of the city whither he fled for refuge, NIV 26 “ ‘But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which they fled LXX 27 and the avenger of blood should find him without the bounds of the city of his refuge, and the avenger of blood should kill the slayer, he is not guilty. NIV 27 and the avenger of blood finds them outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder. LXX 28 For he ought to have remained in the city of refuge till the high-priest died; and after the death of the high-priest the slayer shall return to the land of his possession. NIV 28 The accused must stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may they return to their own property. LXX 29 And these things shall be to you for an ordinance of judgment throughout your generations in all your dwellings. NIV 29 “ ‘This is to have the force of law for you throughout the generations to come, wherever you live. LXX 30 Whoever kills a man, thou shalt slay the murderer on the testimony of witnesses; and one witness shall not testify against a soul that he should die. NIV 30 “ ‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. LXX 31 And ye shall not accept ransoms for life from a murderer who is worthy of death, for he shall be surely put to death. NIV 31 “ ‘Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. They are to be put to death. LXX 32 Ye shall not accept a ransom his fleeing to the city of refuge, so that he should again dwell in the land, until the death of the high-priest. NIV 32 “ ‘Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow them to go back and live on their own land before the death of the high priest. LXX 33 So shall ye not pollute with murder the land in which ye dwell; for this blood pollutes the land, and the land shall not be purged from the blood shed upon it, but by the blood of him that shed it. NIV 33 “ ‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. LXX 34 And ye shall not defile the land whereon ye dwell, on which I dwell in the midst of you; for I am the Lord dwelling in the midst of the children of Israel. NIV 34 Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.’ ”
