Good News Translation GNT
1 This is the vision of Obadiah. We have heard a message from the Lord. A messenger has been sent among the nations, saying, "Attack! Let's go attack Edom!"
1
This is the prophecy of Obadiah - what the Sovereign Lord said about the nation of Edom. The Lord has sent his messenger to the nations, and we have heard his message: "Get ready! Let us go to war against Edom!"
2 "Soon I will make you the smallest of nations. You will be greatly hated by everyone.
2
The Lord says to Edom, "I will make you weak; everyone will despise you.
3 Your pride has fooled you, you who live in the hollow places of the cliff. Your home is up high, you who say to yourself, 'No one can bring me down to the ground.'
3
Your pride has deceived you. Your capital is a fortress of solid rock; your home is high in the mountains, and so you say to yourself, "Who can ever pull me down?'
4 Even if you fly high like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there," says the Lord.
4
Even though you make your home as high as an eagle's nest, so that it seems to be among the stars, yet I will pull you down.
5 "You will really be ruined! If thieves came to you, if robbers came by night, they would steal only enough for themselves. If workers came and picked the grapes from your vines, they would leave a few behind.
5
"When thieves come at night, they take only what they want. When people gather grapes, they always leave a few. But your enemies have wiped you out completely.
6 But you, Edom, will really lose everything! People will find all your hidden treasures!
6
Descendants of Esau, your treasures have been looted.
7 All the people who are your friends will force you out of the land. The people who are at peace with you will trick you and defeat you. Those who eat your bread with you now are planning a trap for you, and you will not notice it."
7
Your allies have deceived you; they have driven you from your country. People who were at peace with you have now conquered you. Those friends who ate with you have laid a trap for you; they say of you, "Where is all that cleverness he had?'
8 The Lord says, "On that day I will surely destroy the wise people from Edom, and those with understanding from the mountains of Edom.
8
"On the day I punish Edom, I will destroy their clever men and wipe out all their wisdom.
9 Then, city of Teman, your best warriors will be afraid, and everyone from the mountains of Edom will be killed.
9
The fighting men of Teman will be terrified, and every soldier in Edom will be killed.
10 You did violence to your relatives, the Israelites, so you will be covered with shame and destroyed forever.
10
"Because you robbed and killed your relatives, the descendants of Jacob, you will be destroyed and dishonored forever.
11 You stood aside without helping while strangers carried Israel's treasures away. and threw lots to decide what part of Jerusalem they would take, you were like one of them.
11
You stood aside on that day when enemies broke down their gates. You were as bad as those strangers who carried off Jerusalem's wealth and divided it among themselves.
12 "Edom, do not laugh at your brother Israel in his time of trouble or be happy about the people of Judah when they are destroyed. Do not brag when cruel things are done to them.
12
You should not have gloated over the misfortune of your relatives in Judah. You should not have been glad on the day of their ruin. You should not have laughed at them in their distress.
13 Do not enter the city gate of my people in their time of trouble or laugh at their problems in their time of trouble. Do not take their treasures in their time of trouble.
13
You should not have entered the city of my people to gloat over their suffering and to seize their riches on the day of their disaster.
14 Do not stand at the crossroads to destroy those who are trying to escape. Do not capture those who escape alive and turn them over to their enemy in their time of trouble.
14
You should not have stood at the crossroads to catch those trying to escape. You should not have handed them over to the enemy on the day of their distress.
15 "The Lord's day of judging is coming soon to all the nations. The same evil things you did to other people will happen to you; they will come back upon your own head.
15
"The day is near when I, the Lord, will judge all nations. Edom, what you have done will be done to you. You will get back what you have given.
16 Because you drank in my Temple, all the nations will drink on and on. They will drink and drink until they disappear.
16
My people have drunk a bitter cup of punishment on my sacred hill. But all the surrounding nations will drink a still more bitter cup of punishment; they will drink it all and vanish away.
17 But on Mount Zion some will escape the judgment, and it will be a holy place. from those who took it from them.
17
"But on Mount Zion some will escape, and it will be a sacred place. The people of Jacob will possess the land that is theirs by right.
18 The people of Jacob will be like a fire and the people of Josephn like a flame. But the people of Esaun will be like dry stalks. The people of Jacob will set them on fire and burn them up. There will be no one left of the people of Esau." This will happen because the Lord has said it.
18
The people of Jacob and of Joseph will be like fire; they will destroy the people of Esau as fire burns stubble. No descendant of Esau will survive. I, the Lord, have spoken.
19 Then God's people will regain southern Judah from Edom; they will take back the mountains of Edom. They will take back the western hills from the Philistines. They will regain the lands of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will take over Gilead.
19
"People from southern Judah will occupy Edom; those from the western foothills will capture Philistia. Israelites will possess the territory of Ephraim and Samaria; the people of Benjamin will take Gilead.
20 People from Israel who once were forced to leave their homes will take the land of the Canaanites, all the way to Zarephath. in Sepharad will take back the cities of southern Judah.
20
The army of exiles from northern Israel will return and conquer Phoenicia as far north as Zarephath. The exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sardis will capture the towns of southern Judah.
21 Powerful warriors will go up on Mount Zion, where they will rule the people living on Edom's mountains. And the kingdom will belong to the Lord.
21
The victorious men of Jerusalem will attack Edom and rule over it. And the Lord himself will be king."
