1 No envidies a la gente malvada,<br />ni desees su compañía.

Do not envy the wicked, do not desire their company;
2 Pues en su corazón traman violencia<br />y sus palabras siempre traen problemas.

for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble.
3 Una casa se edifica con sabiduría<br />y se fortalece por medio del buen juicio.

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established;
4 Mediante el conocimiento se llenan sus cuartos<br />de toda clase de riquezas y objetos valiosos.

through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.
5 Los sabios son más poderosos que los fuertes,<br />y los que tienen conocimiento se hacen cada vez más fuertes.

The wise prevail through great power, and those who have knowledge muster their strength.
6 Así que, no vayas a la guerra sin consejo sabio;<br />la victoria depende de que tengas muchos consejeros.

Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisers.

Wisdom is too high for fools; in the assembly at the gate they must not open their mouths.

Whoever plots evil will be known as a schemer.

The schemes of folly are sin, and people detest a mocker.

If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength!

Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.
12 No te excuses diciendo: «Ay, no lo sabíamos».<br />Pues Dios conoce cada corazón y él te ve.<br />El que cuida tu alma sabe bien que tú sabías.<br />Él pagará a cada uno según merecen sus acciones.

If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?
13 Come miel, hijo mío, porque es buena,<br />y el panal es dulce al paladar.

Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste.
14 Así también, la sabiduría es dulce a tu alma.<br />Si la encuentras, tendrás un futuro brillante,<br />y tus esperanzas no se truncarán.

Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
15 No estés al acecho frente a la casa del justo,<br />ni ataques el lugar donde vive.

Do not lurk like a thief near the house of the righteous, do not plunder their dwelling place;
16 Los justos podrán tropezar siete veces, pero volverán a levantarse.<br />En cambio, basta una sola calamidad para derribar al perverso.

for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.
17 No te alegres cuando tus enemigos caigan;<br />no te pongas contento cuando tropiecen.

Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,
18 Pues el Señor<br /> se molestará contigo<br />y quitará su enojo de ellos.

or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from them.
19 No te inquietes por causa de los que hacen el mal,<br />ni envidies a los perversos.

Do not fret because of evildoers or be envious of the wicked,
20 Pues la gente mala no tiene futuro;<br />la luz de los perversos se apagará.

for the evildoer has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21 Hijo mío, teme al Señor<br /> y al rey.<br />No te juntes con los rebeldes,

Fear the LORD and the king, my son, and do not join with rebellious officials,

for those two will send sudden destruction on them, and who knows what calamities they can bring?

These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judging is not good:
24 El juez que dice al perverso: «Eres inocente»,<br />será maldecido por muchos y denunciado por las naciones.

Whoever says to the guilty, “You are innocent,” will be cursed by peoples and denounced by nations.
25 En cambio, les irá bien a los que condenan al culpable;<br />recibirán bendiciones en abundancia.

But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come on them.
26 Una respuesta sincera<br />es como un beso amistoso.

An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.
27 Antes de construir tu casa<br />haz tus planes y prepara los campos.

Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.
28 No testifiques contra tus vecinos sin motivo;<br />no mientas cuando hables de ellos.

Do not testify against your neighbor without cause— would you use your lips to mislead?
29 No digas: «¡Ahora me voy a vengar de lo que me hicieron!<br />¡Me desquitaré con ellos!».

Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me; I’ll pay them back for what they did.”
30 Pasé por el campo de un perezoso,<br />por el viñedo de uno que carece de sentido común.

I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;
31 Vi que habían crecido espinos por todas partes.<br />Estaba cubierto de maleza,<br />y sus muros destruidos.

thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.

I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw:

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—

and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
