The Message Bible MSG
1 My son, if you guarantee a loan for your neighbor or shake hands in agreement with a stranger,
1
Dear friend, if you've gone into hock with your neighbor or locked yourself into a deal with a stranger,
2 you will be trapped by your words; you will be caught by your words.
2
If you've impulsively promised the shirt off your back and now find yourself shivering out in the cold,
3 Do this, my son, to get out of it, for you have come under the control of your neighbor. So go, humble yourself, and pester your neighbor.
3
Friend, don't waste a minute, get yourself out of that mess. You're in that man's clutches! Go, put on a long face; act desperate.
4 Don't give sleep to your eyes or slumber to your eyelids.
4
Don't procrastinate - there's no time to lose.
5 Get yourself free like a gazelle from a hunter, like a bird from the hand of a fowler.
5
Run like a deer from the hunter, fly like a bird from the trapper! A Lesson from the Ant
6 Go to the ant, you lazy person; observe its ways and grow wise.
6
You lazy fool, look at an ant. Watch it closely; let it teach you a thing or two.
7 The ant has no commander, officer, or ruler.
7
Nobody has to tell it what to do.
8 Even so, it gets its food in summer; gathers its provisions at harvest.
8
All summer it stores up food; at harvest it stockpiles provisions.
9 How long, lazy person, will you lie down? When will you rise from your sleep?
9
So how long are you going to laze around doing nothing? How long before you get out of bed?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to lie down—
10
A nap here, a nap there, a day off here, a day off there, sit back, take it easy - do you know what comes next?
11 and poverty will come on you like a prowler, destitution like a warrior.
11
Just this: You can look forward to a dirt-poor life, poverty your permanent houseguest! Always Cooking Up Something Nasty
12 Worthless people and guilty people go around with crooked talk.
12
Riffraff and rascals talk out of both sides of their mouths.
13 They wink their eyes, gesture with their feet, and point with their fingers.
13
They wink at each other, they shuffle their feet, they cross their fingers behind their backs.
14 Their hearts are corrupt and determined to do evil; they create controversies all the time.
14
Their perverse minds are always cooking up something nasty, always stirring up trouble.
15 Therefore, sudden disaster will come upon them; they will be quickly broken beyond healing.
15
Catastrophe is just around the corner for them, a total smash-up, their lives ruined beyond repair. Seven Things God Hates
16 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven things detestable to him:
16
Here are six things God hates, and one more that he loathes with a passion:
17 snobbish eyes, a lying tongue, hands that spill innocent blood,
17
eyes that are arrogant, a tongue that lies, hands that murder the innocent,
18 a heart set on wicked plans, feet that run quickly to evil,
18
a heart that hatches evil plots, feet that race down a wicked track,
19 a false witness who breathes lies, and one who causes conflicts among relatives.
19
a mouth that lies under oath, a troublemaker in the family. Warning on Adultery
20 My son, keep your father's command; don't abandon your mother's instruction.
20
Good friend, follow your father's good advice; don't wander off from your mother's teachings.
21 Bind them on your heart for all time; fasten them around your neck.
21
Wrap yourself in them from head to foot; wear them like a scarf around your neck.
22 When you walk around, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will protect you; when you awake, they will occupy your attention.
22
Wherever you walk, they'll guide you; whenever you rest, they'll guard you; when you wake up, they'll tell you what's next.
23 The commandment is a lamp and instruction a light; corrective teaching is the path of life.
23
For sound advice is a beacon, good teaching is a light, moral discipline is a life path.
24 They guard you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of the foreign woman.
24
They'll protect you from wanton women, from the seductive talk of some temptress.
25 Don't desire her beauty in secret; don't let her take you in with her eyelashes,
25
Don't lustfully fantasize on her beauty, nor be taken in by her bedroom eyes.
26 for a prostitute costs a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts for a man's very life.
26
You can buy an hour with a whore for a loaf of bread, but a wanton woman may well eat you alive.
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap and his clothes not get burned?
27
Can you build a fire in your lap and not burn your pants?
28 If a man walks on hot coals, don't his feet get burned?
28
Can you walk barefoot on hot coals and not get blisters?
29 So is the man who approaches his neighbor's wife; anyone who touches her will be punished.
29
It's the same when you have sex with your neighbor's wife: Touch her and you'll pay for it. No excuses.
30 People don't despise a thief if he steals to fill his starving stomach.
30
Hunger is no excuse for a thief to steal;
31 But if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give all the riches of his house.
31
When he's caught he has to pay it back, even if he has to put his whole house in hock.
32 He who commits adultery is senseless. Doing so, he destroys himself.
32
Adultery is a brainless act, soul-destroying, self-destructive;
33 He is wounded and disgraced. His shame will never be wiped away.
33
Expect a bloody nose, a black eye, and a reputation ruined for good.
34 Jealousy makes a man rage; he'll show no mercy on his day of revenge.
34
For jealousy detonates rage in a cheated husband; wild for revenge, he won't make allowances.
35 He won't accept compensation; he'll refuse even a large bribe.
35
Nothing you say or pay will make it all right; neither bribes nor reason will satisfy him.
