Psalm 44

CSB 1 God, we have heard with our ears- our forefathers have told us- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago: NIV 1 We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago. CSB 2 to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples. NIV 2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish. CSB 3 For they did not take the land by their sword- their arm did not bring them victory- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them. NIV 3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them. CSB 4 You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. NIV 4 You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. CSB 5 Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. NIV 5 Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. CSB 6 For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. NIV 6 I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; CSB 7 But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. NIV 7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. CSB 8 We boast in God all day long; we will praise Your name forever. Selah NIV 8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. CSB 9 But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies. NIV 9 But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies. CSB 10 You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. NIV 10 You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us. CSB 11 You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. NIV 11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations. CSB 12 You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them. NIV 12 You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale. CSB 13 You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. NIV 13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us. CSB 14 You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. NIV 14 You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. CSB 15 My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, NIV 15 I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame CSB 16 because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. NIV 16 at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge. CSB 17 All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. NIV 17 All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant. CSB 18 Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. NIV 18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path. CSB 19 But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. NIV 19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness. CSB 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, NIV 20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, CSB 21 wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart? NIV 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart? CSB 22 Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. NIV 22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. CSB 23 Wake up, Lord! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! NIV 23 Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever. CSB 24 Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression? NIV 24 Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression? CSB 25 For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. NIV 25 We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. CSB 26 Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love. NIV 26 Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
