Psalm 10

CEB

MSG

1 Why do you stand so far away, LORD, hiding yourself in troubling times?
1 God, are you avoiding me? Where are you when I need you?
2 Meanwhile, the wicked are proudly in hot pursuit of those who suffer. Let them get caught in the very same schemes they've thought up!
2 Full of hot air, the wicked are hot on the trail of the poor. Trip them up, tangle them up in their fine-tuned plots.
3 The wicked brag about their body's cravings; the greedy reject the LORD, cursing.
3 The wicked are windbags, the swindlers have foul breath.
4 At the peak of their wrath, the wicked don't seek God: There's no God— that's what they are always thinking.
4 The wicked snub God, their noses stuck high in the air. Their graffiti are scrawled on the walls: "Catch us if you can!" "God is dead."
5 Their ways are always twisted. Your rules are too lofty for them. They snort at all their foes.
5 They care nothing for what you think; if you get in their way, they blow you off.
6 They think to themselves, We'll never stumble. We'll never encounter any resistance.
6 They live (they think) a charmed life: "We can't go wrong. This is our lucky year!"
7 Their mouths are filled with curses, dishonesty, violence. Under their tongues lie troublemaking and wrongdoing.
7 They carry a mouthful of hexes, their tongues spit venom like adders.
8 They wait in a place perfect for ambush; from their hiding places they kill innocent people; their eyes spot those who are helpless.
8 They hide behind ordinary people, then pounce on their victims.
9 They lie in ambush in secret places, like a lion in its lair. They lie in ambush so they can seize those who suffer! They seize the poor, all right, dragging them off in their nets.
9 They mark the luckless, then wait like a hunter in a blind; When the poor wretch wanders too close, they stab him in the back.
10 Their helpless victims are crushed; they collapse, falling prey to the strength of the wicked.
10 The hapless fool is kicked to the ground, the unlucky victim is brutally axed.
11 The wicked think to themselves: God has forgotten. God has hidden his face. God never sees anything!
11 He thinks God has dumped him, he's sure that God is indifferent to his plight.
12 Get up, LORD! Get your fist ready, God! Don't forget the ones who suffer!
12 Time to get up, God - get moving. The luckless think they're Godforsaken.
13 Why do the wicked reject God? Why do they think to themselves that you won't find out?
13 They wonder why the wicked scorn God and get away with it, Why the wicked are so cocksure they'll never come up for audit.
14 But you do see! You do see troublemaking and grief, and you do something about it! The helpless leave it all to you. You are the orphan's helper.
14 But you know all about it - the contempt, the abuse. I dare to believe that the luckless will get lucky someday in you. You won't let them down: orphans won't be orphans forever.
15 Break the arms of those who are wicked and evil. Seek out their wickedness until there's no more to find.
15 Break the wicked right arms, break all the evil left arms. Search and destroy every sign of crime.
16 The LORD rules forever and always! The nations will vanish from his land.
16 God's grace and order wins; godlessness loses.
17 LORD, you listen to the desires of those who suffer. You steady their hearts; you listen closely to them,
17 The victim's faint pulse picks up; the hearts of the hopeless pump red blood as you put your ear to their lips.
18 to establish justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that people of the land will never again be terrified.
18 Orphans get parents, the homeless get homes. The reign of terror is over, the rule of the gang lords is ended.
