Psalm 137

RHE

NLT

1 (136-1) Upon the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and wept: when we remembered Sion:
1 Beside the rivers of Babylon, we sat and wept as we thought of Jerusalem.
2 (136-2) On the willows in the midst thereof we hung up our instruments.
2 We put away our harps, hanging them on the branches of poplar trees.
3 (136-3) For there they that led us into captivity required of us the words of songs. And they that carried us away, said: Sing ye to us a hymn of the songs of Sion.
3 For our captors demanded a song from us. Our tormentors insisted on a joyful hymn: “Sing us one of those songs of Jerusalem!”
4 (136-4) How shall we sing the song of the Lord in a strange land?
4 But how can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a pagan land?
5 (136-5) If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand be forgotten.
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget how to play the harp.
6 (136-6) Let my tongue cleave to my jaws, if I do not remember thee: If I make not Jerusalem the beginning of my joy.
6 May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I fail to remember you, if I don’t make Jerusalem my greatest joy.
7 (136-7) Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom, in the day of Jerusalem: Who say: Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.
7 O LORD, remember what the Edomites did on the day the armies of Babylon captured Jerusalem. “Destroy it!” they yelled. “Level it to the ground!”
8 (136-8) O daughter of Babylon, miserable: blessed shall he be who shall repay thee thy payment which thou hast paid us.
8 O Babylon, you will be destroyed. Happy is the one who pays you back for what you have done to us.
9 (136-9) Blessed be he that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock.
9 Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks!
