Psalm 38

RHE

NLT

1 (37-1) <A psalm for David, for a remembrance of the sabbath.> (37-2) Rebuke me not, O Lord, in thy indignation; nor chastise me in thy wrath.
1 O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage!
2 (37-3) For thy arrows are fastened in me: and thy hand hath been strong upon me.
2 Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me.
3 (37-4) There is no health in my flesh, because of thy wrath: there is no peace for my bones, because of my sins.
3 Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins.
4 (37-5) For my iniquities are gone over my head: and as a heavy burden are become heavy upon me.
4 My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear.
5 (37-6) My sores are putrefied and corrupted, because of my foolishness.
5 My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins.
6 (37-7) I am become miserable, and am bowed down even to the end: I walked sorrowful all the day long.
6 I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief.
7 (37-8) For my loins are filled with illusions; and there is no health in my flesh.
7 A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken.
8 (37-9) I am afflicted and humbled exceedingly: I roared with the groaning of my heart.
8 I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.
9 (37-10) Lord, all my desire is before thee, and my groaning is not hidden from thee.
9 You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh.
10 (37-11) My heart is troubled, my strength hath left me, and the light of my eyes itself is not with me.
10 My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind.
11 (37-12) My friends and my neighbours have drawn near, and stood against me. And they that were near me stood afar off:
11 My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance.
12 (37-13) And they that sought my soul used violence. And they that sought evils to me spoke vain things, and studied deceits all the day long.
12 Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery.
13 (37-14) But I, as a deaf man, heard not: and as a dumb man not opening his mouth.
13 But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak.
14 (37-15) And I became as a man that heareth not: and that hath no reproofs in his mouth.
14 I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply.
15 (37-16) For in thee, O Lord, have I hoped: thou wilt hear me, O Lord my God.
15 For I am waiting for you, O LORD . You must answer for me, O Lord my God.
16 (37-17) For I said: Lest at any time my enemies rejoice over me: and whilst my feet are moved, they speak great things against me.
16 I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.”
17 (37-18) For I am ready for scourges: and my sorrow is continually before me.
17 I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain.
18 (37-19) For I will declare my iniquity: and I will think of my sin.
18 But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done.
19 (37-20) But my enemies live, and are stronger than I: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.
19 I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason.
20 (37-21) They that render evil for good, have detracted me, because I followed goodness.
20 They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good.
21 (37-22) For sake me not, O Lord my God: do not thou depart from me.
21 Do not abandon me, O LORD . Do not stand at a distance, my God.
22 (37-23) Attend unto my help, O Lord, the God of my salvation.
22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior.
