New Living Translation NLT
1 (39-1) <Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.> (39-2) With expectation I have waited for the Lord, and he was attentive to me.
1
I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 (39-3) And he heard my prayers, and brought me out of the pit of misery and the mire of dregs. And he set my feet upon a rock, and directed my steps.
2
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
3 (39-4) And he put a new canticle into my mouth, a song to our God. Many shall see, and shall fear: and they shall hope in the Lord.
3
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD .
4 (39-5) Blessed is the man whose trust is in the name of the Lord; and who hath not had regard to vanities, and lying follies.
4
Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.
5 (39-6) Thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, O Lord my God: and in thy thoughts there is no one like to thee. I have declared and I have spoken they are multiplied above number.
5
O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.
6 (39-7) Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire; but thou hast pierced ears for me. Burnt offering and sin offering thou didst not require:
6
You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.
7 (39-8) Then said I, Behold I come. In the head of the book it is written of me
7
Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures:
8 (39-9) That I should do thy will: O my God, I have desired it, and thy law in the midst of my heart.
8
I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”
9 (39-10) I have declared thy justice in a great church, lo, I will not restrain my lips: O Lord, thou knowest it.
9
I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know.
10 (39-11) I have not hid thy justice within my heart: I have declared thy truth and thy salvation. I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth from a great council.
10
I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.
11 (39-12) Withhold not thou, O Lord, thy tender mercies from me: thy mercy and thy truth have always upheld me.
11
LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.
12 (39-13) For evils without number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head: and my heart hath forsaken me.
12
For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.
13 (39-14) Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me. look down, O Lord, to help me.
13
Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me.
14 (39-15) Let them be confounded and ashamed together, that seek after my soul to take it away. Let them be turned backward and be ashamed that desire evils to me.
14
May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.
15 (39-16) Let them immediately bear their confusion, that say to me: ’T is well, t’ is well.
15
Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!”
16 (39-17) Let all that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say always: The Lord be magnified.
16
But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!”
17 (39-18) But I am a beggar and poor: the Lord is careful for me. Thou art my helper and my protector: O my God, be not slack.
17
As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay.
