New Living Translation NLT
1 (40-1) <Unto the end, a psalm for David himself.> (40-2) Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: the Lord will deliver him in the evil day.
1
Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The LORD rescues them when they are in trouble.
2 (40-3) The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.
2
The LORD protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity in the land and rescues them from their enemies.
3 (40-4) The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.
3
The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.
4 (40-5) I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.
4
“O LORD,” I prayed, “have mercy on me. Heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
5 (40-6) My enemies have spoken evils against me: when shall he die and his name perish?
5
But my enemies say nothing but evil about me. “How soon will he die and be forgotten?” they ask.
6 (40-7) And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things: his heart gathered together iniquity to itself. He went out and spoke to the same purpose.
6
They visit me as if they were my friends, but all the while they gather gossip, and when they leave, they spread it everywhere.
7 (40-8) All my enemies whispered together against me: they devised evils to me.
7
All who hate me whisper about me, imagining the worst.
8 (40-9) They determined against me an unjust word: shall he that sleepeth rise again no more?
8
“He has some fatal disease,” they say. “He will never get out of that bed!”
9 (40-10) For even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.
9
Even my best friend, the one I trusted completely, the one who shared my food, has turned against me.
10 (40-11) But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise my up again: and I will requite them.
10
LORD, have mercy on me. Make me well again, so I can pay them back!
11 (40-12) By this I know, that thou hast had a good will for me: because my enemy shall not rejoice over me.
11
I know you are pleased with me, for you have not let my enemies triumph over me.
12 (40-13) But thou hast upheld me by reason of my innocence: and hast established me in thy sight for ever.
12
You have preserved my life because I am innocent; you have brought me into your presence forever.
13 (40-14) Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity. So be it. So be it.
13
Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and amen!
