The Message Bible MSG
1 From the rising of the sun to where it sets, God, the LORD God, speaks, calling out to the earth.
1
The God of gods - it's God! - speaks out, shouts, "Earth!" welcomes the sun in the east, farewells the disappearing sun in the west.
2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines brightly.
2
From the dazzle of Zion, God blazes into view.
3 Our God is coming; he won't keep quiet. A devouring fire is before him; a storm rages all around him.
3
Our God makes his entrance, he's not shy in his coming. Starbursts of fireworks precede him.
4 God calls out to the skies above and to the earth in order to judge his people:
4
He summons heaven and earth as a jury, he's taking his people to court:
5 "Bring my faithful to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice."
5
"Round up my saints who swore on the Bible their loyalty to me."
6 The skies proclaim his righteousness because God himself is the judge. Selah
6
The whole cosmos attests to the fairness of this court, that here God is judge.
7 "Listen, my people, I will now speak; Israel, I will now testify against you. I am God—your God!
7
"Are you listening, dear people? I'm getting ready to speak; Israel, I'm about ready to bring you to trial. This is God, your God, speaking to you.
8 I'm not punishing you for your sacrifices or for your entirely burned offerings, which are always before me.
8
I don't find fault with your acts of worship, the frequent burnt sacrifices you offer.
9 I won't accept bulls from your house or goats from your corrals
9
But why should I want your blue-ribbon bull, or more and more goats from your herds?
10 because every forest animal already belongs to me, as do the cattle on a thousand hills.
10
Every creature in the forest is mine, the wild animals on all the mountains.
11 I know every mountain bird; even the insects in the fields are mine.
11
I know every mountain bird by name; the scampering field mice are my friends.
12 Even if I were hungry, I wouldn't tell you because the whole world and everything in it already belong to me.
12
If I get hungry, do you think I'd tell you? All creation and its bounty are mine.
13 Do I eat bulls' meat? Do I drink goats' blood?
13
Do you think I feast on venison? or drink draughts of goats' blood?
14 Offer God a sacrifice of thanksgiving! Fulfill the promisesyou made to the Most High!
14
Spread for me a banquet of praise, serve High God a feast of kept promises,
15 Cry out to me whenever you are in trouble; I will deliver you, then you will honor me."
15
And call for help when you're in trouble - I'll help you, and you'll honor me."
16 But to the wicked God says, "Why do you talk about my laws? Why do you even mention my covenant?
16
Next, God calls up the wicked: "What are you up to, quoting my laws, talking like we are good friends?
17 You hate discipline, and you toss my words behind your back.
17
You never answer the door when I call; you treat my words like garbage.
18 You make friends with thieves whenever you see one; you spend your time with adulterers.
18
If you find a thief, you make him your buddy; adulterers are your friends of choice.
19 You set your mouth free to do evil, then harness your tongue to tell lies.
19
Your mouth drools filth; lying is a serious art form with you.
20 You sit around, talking about your own siblings; you find fault with the children of your very own mother.
20
You stab your own brother in the back, rip off your little sister.
21 You've done these things and I've kept quiet. You thought I was just like you! But now I'm punishing you; I'm laying it all out, right in front of your face.
21
I kept a quiet patience while you did these things; you thought I went along with your game. I'm calling you on the carpet, now, laying your wickedness out in plain sight.
22 So consider this carefully, all you who forget God, or I'll rip you to pieces with no one to deliver you:
22
"Time's up for playing fast and loose with me. I'm ready to pass sentence, and there's no help in sight!
23 The one who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving is the one who honors me. And it is to the one who charts the correct path that I will show divine salvation."
23
It's the praising life that honors me. As soon as you set your foot on the Way, I'll show you my salvation."
