New Living Translation NLT
1 (50-1) <Unto the end, a psalm of David, (50-2) When Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had sinned with Bethsabee.> (50-3) Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity.
1
Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.
2 (50-4) Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
2
Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.
3 (50-5) For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.
3
For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night.
4 (50-6) To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: that thou mayst be justified in thy words, and mayst overcome when thou art judged.
4
Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.
5 (50-7) For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive me.
5
For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
6 (50-8) For behold thou hast loved truth: the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.
6
But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there.
7 (50-9) Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
7
Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 (50-10) To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.
8
Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me— now let me rejoice.
9 (50-11) Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
9
Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt.
10 (50-12) Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bowels.
10
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 (50-13) Cast me not away from thy face; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
11
Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 (50-14) Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.
12
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.
13 (50-15) I will teach the unjust thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
13
Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.
14 (50-16) Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol thy justice.
14
Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.
15 (50-17) O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
15
Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you.
16 (50-18) For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.
16
You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering.
17 (50-19) A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
17
The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.
18 (50-20) Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
18
Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19 (50-21) Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.
19
Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit— with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar.
