Psalm 88

NCV

ESV

1 Lord, you are the God who saves me. I cry out to you day and night.
1 O Lord, God of my salvation; I cry out day and night before you.
2 Receive my prayer, and listen to my cry.
2 Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry!
3 My life is full of troubles, and I am nearly dead.
3 For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol.
4 They think I am on the way to my grave. I am like a man with no strength.
4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength,
5 I have been left as dead, like a body lying in a grave whom you don't remember anymore, cut off from your care.
5 like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand.
6 You have brought me close to death; I am almost in the dark place of the dead.
6 You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep.
7 You have been very angry with me; all your waves crush me.Selah
7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah
8 You have taken my friends away from me and have made them hate me. I am trapped and cannot escape.
8 You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
9 My eyes are weak from crying. Lord, I have prayed to you every day; I have lifted my hands in prayer to you.
9 my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O Lord; I spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you show your miracles for the dead? Do their spirits rise up and praise you?Selah
10 Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
11 Will your love be told in the grave? Will your loyalty be told in the place of death?
11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12 Will your miracles be known in the dark grave? Will your goodness be known in the land of forgetfulness?
12 Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13 But, Lord, I have called out to you for help; every morning I pray to you.
13 But I, O Lord, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 Lord, why do you reject me? Why do you hide from me?
14 O Lord, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me?
15 I have been weak and dying since I was young. I suffer from your terrors, and I am helpless.
15 Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
16 You have been angry with me, and your terrors have destroyed me.
16 Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me.
17 They surround me daily like a flood; they are all around me.
17 They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together.
18 You have taken away my loved ones and friends. Darkness is my only friend. A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.
18 You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness.
