1 I'm thanking you, God, from a full heart, I'm writing the book on your wonders.
1
<<For the Chief Musician. Set to "The Death of the Son." A Psalm by David.>> I will give thanks to Yahweh with my whole heart. I will tell of all your marvelous works.
2 I'm whistling, laughing, and jumping for joy; I'm singing your song, High God.
2
I will be glad and rejoice in you. I will sing praise to your name, you Most High.
3 The day my enemies turned tail and ran, they stumbled on you and fell on their faces.
3
When my enemies turn back, They stumble and perish in your presence.
4 You took over and set everything right; when I needed you, you were there, taking charge.
4
For you have maintained my right and my cause. You sit on the throne judging righteously.
5 You blow the whistle on godless nations; you throw dirty players out of the game, wipe their names right off the roster.
5
You have rebuked the nations. You have destroyed the wicked. You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 Enemies disappear from the sidelines, their reputation trashed, their names erased from the halls of fame.
6
The enemy is overtaken by endless ruin. The very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished.
7 God holds the high center, he sees and sets the world's mess right.
7
But Yahweh reigns forever. He has prepared his throne for judgment.
8 He decides what is right for us earthlings, gives people their just deserts.
8
He will judge the world in righteousness. He will administer judgment to the peoples in uprightness.
9 God's a safe-house for the battered, a sanctuary during bad times.
9
Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed; A high tower in times of trouble.
10 The moment you arrive, you relax; you're never sorry you knocked.
10
Those who know your name will put their trust in you, For you, Yahweh, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11 Sing your songs to Zion-dwelling God, tell his stories to everyone you meet:
11
Sing praises to Yahweh, who dwells in Zion, And declare among the people what he has done.
12 How he tracks down killers yet keeps his eye on us, registers every whimper and moan.
12
For he who avenges blood remembers them. He doesn't forget the cry of the afflicted.
13 Be kind to me, God; I've been kicked around long enough. Once you've pulled me back from the gates of death,
13
Have mercy on me, Yahweh. See my affliction by those who hate me, And lift me up from the gates of death;
14 I'll write the book on Hallelujahs; on the corner of Main and First I'll hold a street meeting; I'll be the song leader; we'll fill the air with salvation songs.
14
That I may show forth all your praise. In the gates of the daughter of Zion I will rejoice in your salvation.
15 They're trapped, those godless countries, in the very snares they set, Their feet all tangled in the net they spread.
15
The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made; In the net which they hid, their own foot is taken.
16 They have no excuse; the way God works is well-known. The cunning machinery made by the wicked has maimed their own hands.
16
Yahweh has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah.
17 The wicked bought a one-way ticket to hell.
17
The wicked shall be turned back to Sheol, Even all the nations that forget God.
18 No longer will the poor be nameless - no more humiliation for the humble.
18
For the needy shall not always be forgotten, Nor the hope of the poor perish forever.
19 Up, God! Aren't you fed up with their empty strutting? Expose these grand pretensions!
19
Arise, Yahweh! Don't let man prevail. Let the nations be judged in your sight.
20 Shake them up, God! Show them how silly they look.
20
Put them in fear, Yahweh. Let the nations know that they are only men. Selah.
