1 (89-1) <A prayer of Moses the man of God.> Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation.

Lord, through all the generations you have been our home!
2 (89-2) Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed; from eternity and to eternity thou art God.

Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.
3 (89-3) Turn not man away to be brought low: and thou hast said: Be converted, O ye sons of men.

You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!”
4 (89-4) For a thousand years in thy sight are as yesterday, which is past. And as a watch in the night,

For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours.
5 (89-5) Things that are counted nothing, shall their years be.

You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning.
6 (89-6) In the morning man shall grow up like grass; in the morning he shall flourish and pass away: in the evening he shall fall, grow dry, and wither.

In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered.
7 (89-7) For in thy wrath we have fainted away: and are troubled in thy indignation.

We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury.
8 (89-8) Thou hast set our iniquities before thy eyes: our life in the light of thy countenance.

You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins—and you see them all.
9 (89-9) For all our days are spent; and in thy wrath we have fainted away. Our years shall be considered as a spider:

We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan.
10 (89-10) The days of our years in them are threescore and ten years. But if in the strong they be fourscore years: and what is more of them is labour and sorrow. For mildness is come upon us: and we shall be corrected.

Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away.
11 (89-11) Who knoweth the power of thy anger, and for thy fear

Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve.
12 (89-12) Can number thy wrath? So make thy right hand known: and men learned in heart, in wisdom.

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.
13 (89-13) Return, O Lord, how long? and be entreated in favour of thy servants.

O LORD, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants!
14 (89-14) We are filled in the morning with thy mercy: and we have rejoiced, and are delighted all our days.

Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.
15 (89-15) We have rejoiced for the days in which thou hast humbled us: for the years in which we have seen evils.

Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good.
16 (89-16) Look upon thy servants and upon their works: and direct their children.

Let us, your servants, see you work again; let our children see your glory.
17 (89-17) And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: and direct thou the works of our hands over us; yea, the work of our hands do thou direct.

And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful!
