Giosué 4:13-23

13 Essi passarono, nelle campagne di Gerico, davanti al Signore, alla guerra, in numero d’intorno a quarantamila combattenti.

14 In quel giorno il Signore magnificò Giosuè davanti agli occhi di tutto Israele; ed essi lo temettero, come aveano temuto Mosè, tutti i giorni della sua vita.

15 Or il Signore avea parlato a Giosuè, dicendo:

16 Comanda a’ sacerdoti che portano l’Arca della Testimonianza, che salgano fuor del Giordano.

17 E Giosuè comandò, e disse a’ sacerdoti: Salite fuor del Giordano.

18 E avvenne, che quando i sacerdoti che portavano l’Arca del Patto del Signore furono saliti di mezzo al Giordano, come prima le piante de’ lor piedi ne furono spiccate, e poste in su l’asciutto, le acque del Giordano ritornarono al luogo loro, e corsero come per addietro, sopra tutte le rive di esso.

19 Così il popolo salì fuor del Giordano, nel decimo giorno del primo mese, e si accampò in Ghilgal, dal lato orientale di Gerico.

20 E Giosuè rizzò in Ghilgal quelle dodici pietre, che aveano tolte dal Giordano.

21 E disse a’ figliuoli d’Israele in questa maniera: Quando i vostri figliuoli nel tempo a venire domanderanno i lor padri, dicendo: Che voglion dire queste pietre?

22 Voi il farete assapere a’ vostri figliuoli, dicendo: Israele passò questo Giordano per l’asciutto.

23 Conciossiachè il Signore Iddio vostro abbia seccate le acque del Giordano davanti a voi, finchè voi siate passati; siccome il Signore Iddio vostro fece al mar rosso, il quale egli seccò davanti a noi, finchè fossimo passati;

INTRODUCTION TO JOSHUA 4

This chapter relates an order, that is men, should take twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, and carry them to the first place they lodged at as a memorial of their passage over it, Jos 4:1-8; and how Joshua set up twelve other stones in the river itself, Jos 4:9; and how many of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, went before the Israelites when they passed over, Jos 4:10-14; which being done, the priests were ordered to come out of Jordan, when the waters returned to their place, Jos 4:15-18; The time when this miracle was wrought is observed, Jos 4:19; and an account is given of Joshua's pitching the twelve stones taken out of Jordan in Gilgal, and the use they were to be of in future time, Jos 4:20-24.
