23 Ci sian dunque dati due giovenchi; quelli ne scelgano uno per loro, lo facciano a pezzi e lo mettano sulle legna, senz’appiccarvi il fuoco; io pure preparerò l’altro giovenco, lo metterò sulle legna, e non v’appiccherò il fuoco.

1 Kings 18:23

Let them therefore give us two bullocks
Who, being so many, were better able to be at the expense of them, and having the king on their party too; though perhaps no more is meant than that two bullocks should be brought thither, and presented before them:

and let them choose one bullock for themselves;
which of the two they would, if they thought one was any ways preferable to the other, it was at their option to take it:

and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood;
as sacrifices usually were:

and put no fire under;
which was wont to be done for burnt offerings, as this was designed to be:

and I will dress the other bullock;
by slaying and cutting it in pieces;

and lay it on wood:
as for a burnt offering:

and put no fire under;
to consume it.

21 Allora Elia s’accostò a tutto il popolo, e disse: "Fino a quando zoppicherete voi dai due lati? Se l’Eterno è Dio, seguitelo; se poi lo è Baal, seguite lui". Il popolo non gli rispose verbo.

22 Allora Elia disse al popolo: "Son rimasto io solo de’ profeti dell’Eterno, mentre i profeti di Baal sono in quattrocentocinquanta.

23 Ci sian dunque dati due giovenchi; quelli ne scelgano uno per loro, lo facciano a pezzi e lo mettano sulle legna, senz’appiccarvi il fuoco; io pure preparerò l’altro giovenco, lo metterò sulle legna, e non v’appiccherò il fuoco.

24 Quindi invocate voi il nome del vostro dio, e io invocherò il nome dell’Eterno; e il dio che risponderà mediante il fuoco egli sia Dio". Tutto il popolo rispose e disse: "Ben detto!"

25 Allora Elia disse ai profeti di Baal: "Sceglietevi uno de’ giovenchi; preparatelo i primi, giacché siete i più numerosi; e invocate il vostro dio, ma non appiccate il fuoco".
