12 Chi è il savio che capisca queste cose? Chi è colui al quale la bocca dell’Eterno ha parlato perché ei ne dia l’annunzio? Perché il paese è egli distrutto, desolato come un deserto talché niuno vi passa?

Jeremiah 9:12

Who is the wise man that may understand this?
&c.] Not the calamity, but the cause of it; a man of wisdom would inquire into it, find it out, and understand it; but the intimation is, that there was not a wise man among them, at least very few; there were scarce any that took any notice of these things, or were concerned about them: and who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord hath spoken;
and foretold this desolation and destruction; meaning a prophet: that he may declare it;
as from the Lord, namely, what follows: for what the land perisheth, and is burnt like a wilderness, that none
passeth through?
that is, what were the sins of the inhabitants of the land, which brought such distress upon it, and for which it became such a ruinous heap, and like the heath in the wilderness, so that it had no inhabitant, nor even a passenger: they must be some very great and abominable iniquities that were the cause of all this.

10 Io vo’ dare in pianto ed in gemito, per i monti, e vo’ dare in lamento per i pascoli del deserto, perché son arsi, talché niuno più vi passa, e non vi s’ode più voce di bestiame; gli uccelli del cielo e le bestie sono fuggite, sono scomparse.

11 Io ridurrò Gerusalemme in un monte di ruine, in un ricetto di sciacalli; e farò delle città di Giuda una desolazione senza abitanti.

12 Chi è il savio che capisca queste cose? Chi è colui al quale la bocca dell’Eterno ha parlato perché ei ne dia l’annunzio? Perché il paese è egli distrutto, desolato come un deserto talché niuno vi passa?

13 L’Eterno risponde: Perché costoro hanno abbandonato la mia legge ch’io avevo loro posta dinanzi e non hanno dato ascolto alla mia voce, e non l’hanno seguìta nella lor condotta,

14 ma han seguito la caparbietà dei cuor loro, e sono andati dietro ai Baali, come i loro padri insegnarono loro.
