And it came to pass, that while they communed together,
&c.] About the above said things:

and reasoned;
with one another; about the truth and credibility of the late report:

Jesus himself drew near:
the Persic version adds, "suddenly"; he came up at once to them, as if he had been a traveller on the road, and overtook them:

and went with them;
joined himself in company to them, and travelled with them.

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,
14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.
16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
17 And he said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still, looking sad.
