Luke 20:7 Meaning and Commentary

Ver. 7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it
was.
] Whether from heaven, or of men; in this, no doubt, they told an untruth: but they chose rather to sacrifice their consciences than their interest, and pretend ignorance rather than profess the truth, when they saw they should be put to confusion, or be exposed to the resentments of the people.

5 οἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν · Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ · Διὰ τί οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
6 ἐὰν δὲ εἴπωμεν · Ἐξ ἀνθρώπων, ὁ λαὸς ἅπας ⸃ καταλιθάσει ἡμᾶς, πεπεισμένος γάρ ἐστιν Ἰωάννην προφήτην εἶναι ·
7 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν μὴ εἰδέναι πόθεν.
8 καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς · Οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ.
9 Ἤρξατο δὲ πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγειν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην · Ἄνθρωπος ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα, καὶ ἐξέδετο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς, καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν χρόνους ἱκανούς.
