Psalm 105

1 Alabad al SEÑOR, invocad su Nombre; haced notorias sus obras en los pueblos.

2 Cantadle, decid salmos a él; hablad de todas sus maravillas.

3 Gloriaos en su Nombre santo; alégrese el corazón de los que buscan al SEÑOR.

4 Buscad al SEÑOR, y su fortaleza; buscad su rostro siempre.

5 Acordaos de sus maravillas que hizo, de sus prodigios y de los juicios de su boca,

6 oh vosotros , simiente de Abraham su siervo, hijos de Jacob, sus escogidos.

7 El es el SEÑOR nuestro Dios; en toda la tierra son sus juicios.

8 Se acordó para siempre de su alianza; de la palabra que mandó para mil generaciones,

9 la cual concertó con Abraham; y de su juramento a Isaac.

10 Y la estableció a Jacob por decreto, a Israel por pacto eterno,

11 diciendo: A ti te daré la tierra de Canaán por cordel de vuestra heredad.

12 Esto siendo ellos pocos hombres en número, y extranjeros en ella.

13 Y anduvieron de gente en gente, de un reino a otro pueblo.

14 No consintió que hombre los agraviase; y por causa de ellos castigó los reyes.

15 Diciendo : No toquéis a mis ungidos, ni hagáis mal a mis profetas.

16 Y llamó al hambre sobre la tierra, y quebrantó toda fuerza de pan.

17 Envió un varón delante de ellos, a José, que fue vendido por siervo.

18 Afligieron sus pies con grillos; en hierro fue puesta su alma.

19 Hasta la hora que llegó su palabra, el dicho del SEÑOR le purificó.

20 Envió el rey, y le soltó; el señor de los pueblos, y le desató.

21 Lo puso por señor de su casa, y por enseñoreador en toda su posesión;

22 para echar presos sus príncipes como él quisiese, y enseñó sabiduría a sus ancianos.

23 Después entró Israel en Egipto, y Jacob fue extranjero en la tierra de Cam.

24 Y multiplicó su pueblo en gran manera, y lo hizo más fuerte que sus enemigos.

25 Volvió el corazón de ellos para que aborreciesen a su pueblo, para que pensasen mal contra sus siervos.

26 Envió a su siervo Moisés, y a Aarón al cual escogió.

27 Puso en ellos las palabras de sus señales, y sus prodigios en la tierra de Cam.

28 Echó tinieblas, e hizo oscuridad; y no fueron rebeldes a su palabra.

29 Volvió sus aguas en sangre, y mató sus peces.

30 Engendró ranas su tierra, ranas en las camas de sus mismos reyes.

31 Dijo, y vinieron enjambres de moscas , y piojos en todo su término.

32 Volvió sus lluvias en granizo; en fuego de llamas en su tierra.

33 E hirió sus viñas y sus higueras, y quebró los árboles de su término.

34 Dijo, y vinieron langostas, y pulgón sin número;

35 y comieron toda la hierba de su tierra, y comieron el fruto de su tierra.

36 Hirió además a todos los primogénitos en su tierra, el principio de toda su fuerza.

37 Y los sacó con plata y oro; y no hubo en sus tribus enfermo.

38 Egipto se alegró en su salida; porque había caído sobre ellos su terror.

39 Extendió una nube por cubierta, y fuego para alumbrar la noche.

40 Pidieron, e hizo venir codornices; y de pan del cielo los sació.

41 Abrió la peña, y corrieron aguas; fluyeron por los secadales un río.

42 Porque se acordó de su santa palabra con Abraham su siervo.

43 Y sacó a su pueblo con gozo; con júbilo a sus escogidos.

44 Y les dio las tierras de los gentiles; y las labores de las naciones heredaron,

Psalm 105 Commentary

Chapter 105

A solemn call to praise and serve the Lord. (1-7) His gracious dealings with Israel. (8-23) Their deliverance from Egypt, and their settlement in Canaan. (24-45)

Verses 1-7 Our devotion is here stirred up, that we may stir up ourselves to praise God. Seek his strength; that is, his grace; the strength of his Spirit to work in us that which is good, which we cannot do but by strength derived from him, for which he will be sought. Seek to have his favour to eternity, therefore continue seeking it while living in this world; for he will not only be found, but he will reward those that diligently seek him.

Verses 8-23 Let us remember the Redeemer's marvellous works, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth. Though true Christians are few number, strangers and pilgrims upon earth, yet a far better inheritance than Canaan is made sure to them by the covenant of God; and if we have the anointing of the Holy Spirit, none can do us any harm. Afflictions are among our mercies. They prove our faith and love, they humble our pride, they wean us from the world, and quicken our prayers. Bread is the staff which supports life; when that staff is broken, the body fails and sinks to the earth. The word of God is the staff of spiritual life, the food and support of the soul: the sorest judgment is a famine of hearing the word of the Lord. Such a famine was sore in all lands when Christ appeared in the flesh; whose coming, and the blessed effect of it, are shadowed forth in the history of Joseph. At the appointed time Christ was exalted as Mediator; all the treasures of grace and salvation are at his disposal, perishing sinners come to him, and are relieved by him.

Verses 24-45 As the believer commonly thrives best in his soul when under the cross; so the church also flourishes most in true holiness, and increases in number, while under persecution. Yet instruments shall be raised up for their deliverance, and plagues may be expected by persecutors. And see the special care God took of his people in the wilderness. All the benefits bestowed on Israel as a nation, were shadows of spiritual blessings with which we are blessed in Christ Jesus. Having redeemed us with his blood, restored our souls to holiness, and set us at liberty from Satan's bondage, he guides and guards us all the way. He satisfies our souls with the bread of heaven, and the water of life from the Rock of salvation, and will bring us safely to heaven. He redeems his servants from all iniquity, and purifies them unto himself, to be a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 105

This psalm was penned by David, and sung at the time when the ark was brought from the house of Obededom to the place which David had prepared for it; at least the first fifteen verses of it, the other part being probably added afterwards by the same inspired penman, as appears from 1Ch 16:1-7. The subject matter of the psalm is the special and distinguishing goodness of God to the children of Israel, and to his church and people, of which they were typical: the history of God's regard to and care of their principal ancestors, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and of the whole body of the people, in bringing them out of Egypt, leading them through the wilderness, and settling them in the land of Canaan, is here recited, as an argument for praise and thankfulness.
