11 Then the Jews sought Him at the feast and said, "Where is he?"

John 7:11 Meaning and Commentary

John 7:11

Then the Jews sought him at the feast
Some to take him and kill him, and others to hear his doctrine, and see his miracles: for all expected him at the feast, knowing it was always his custom, as it was his duty, as an Israelite, to attend at it:

and said, where is he?
not naming his name; either through contempt, which might be the case of the far greater part; or through fear of the Jews; or because that he was so well known.

John 7:11 In-Context

9 When He had said these words unto them, He remained still in Galilee.
10 But when His brethren had gone up, then He also went up unto the feast, not openly but, as it were, in secret.
11 Then the Jews sought Him at the feast and said, "Where is he?"
12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning Him. For some said, "He is a good man," and others said, "Nay, for he deceiveth the people."
13 Yet no man spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.
