John 19:16 Meaning and Commentary

John 19:16

Then delivered he him therefore
Perceiving he could not by any means work upon them, and that nothing would satisfy them but his death; he therefore passed sentence on him, and gave him up to their will,

unto them to be crucified;
as they requested, and which was done in a judicial way, and all by divine appointment, according to the counsel and foreknowledge of God:

and they took Jesus and led him away;
directly from the judgment hall, out of the city to the place of execution, whither he was led as a lamb to the slaughter, without opening his mouth against God or man; but behaved with the utmost patience, meekness, and resignation.

John 19:16 In-Context

14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith to the Jews, Behold your King!
15 But they cried out, Away with [him], away with [him], crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar.
16 Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led [him] away.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called [the place] of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on each side one, and Jesus in the midst.
