Psalms 18:31

31 For who is God, except Yahweh? Who is a rock, besides our God,

Psalms 18:31 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 18:31

For who [is] God save the Lord?
&c.] Or Jehovah: there is but one God, and Jehovah is he; there is none besides him, nor any like him: there are many that are called gods, nominal deities, who are not by nature gods; fictitious ones, the idols of the Gentiles, made of gold, silver, brass, wood, and stone; but there is but one true God: there are gods, in an improper sense, as civil magistrates; but there is none really and truly so but the Lord; which is to be understood, not of Jehovah the Father, to the exclusion of the Son and Spirit; for the Son is Jehovah, and the Spirit is Jehovah; both are so called, as well as the Father, and all three one God;

or who [is] a rock save our God?
to have recourse to for shelter and protection; or to trust to, and build upon, for eternal life and salvation. False gods are rocks; but not like ours, our enemies themselves being judges, ( Deuteronomy 32:31 ) ; so Apollo at Delphos is called the Delphian rock F14: the words seem to be taken from, or at least there is in them a reference to, ( 1 Samuel 2:2 ) .

Psalms 18:31 In-Context

29 For by you, I advance through a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall.
30 As for God, his way is perfect. The word of Yahweh is tried. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God, except Yahweh? Who is a rock, besides our God,
32 The God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect?
33 He makes my feet like hinds' feet, And sets me on my high places.
