Psalms 89:34

34 Neither I shall make unholy my testament; and I shall not make void those things that come forth of my lips. (Nor shall I break my covenant; and I shall not make void those things which come forth from my lips, that is, I shall not break my promises.)

Psalms 89:34 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 89:34

My covenant will I not break
Not the covenant at Sinai, as Aben Ezra, but the covenant of grace made with Christ, and which stands fast with him, ( Psalms 89:3 Psalms 89:28 ) , which is firm, sure, and stable, and as immovable as mountains and hills, and more so, ( 2 Samuel 23:5 ) ( Isaiah 54:10 ) or "profane" F13 it, though his people profane his statutes, ( Psalms 89:31 ) , he will not profane his covenant; though they violate his laws, he is a God keeping covenant with them, and will not break his word with them:

nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips;
any promise of his, respecting either the temporal, spiritual, or eternal welfare of his people: or "not change" F14; as he changes not in his nature and perfections, nor in his love and affections, nor in his counsels and purposes; so neither in his covenant and promises, they are always the same, and have a certain and unchangeable accomplishment; there is a performance of whatsoever is spoken by the Lord, ( Luke 1:45 ) .

Psalms 89:34 In-Context

32 I shall visit in a rod the wickednesses of them; and in beatings the sins of them. (Then I shall punish their wickednesses with a rod; and their sins with beatings.)
33 But I shall not scatter my mercy from him; and in my truth I shall not harm him. (But I shall not take away my love from him; and I shall be faithful to him.)
34 Neither I shall make unholy my testament; and I shall not make void those things that come forth of my lips. (Nor shall I break my covenant; and I shall not make void those things which come forth from my lips, that is, I shall not break my promises.)
35 Once I swore in mine holiness, I shall not lie to David; (Once I swore by my holiness, that I would never lie to David;)
36 his seed shall dwell [into] without end. And his throne as [the] sun in my sight, (his children, that is, his descendants, shall live forever. And his throne shall be before me like the sun,)
