Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead,1 descended from David.2 This is my gospel,39
for which I am suffering4 even to the point of being chained5 like a criminal. But God's word6 is not chained.
Therefore I endure everything7 for the sake of the elect,8 that they too may obtain the salvation9 that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.1011
Here is a trustworthy saying:11 If we died with him, we will also live with him;1212
if we endure, we will also reign with him.13 If we disown him, he will also disown us;1413
if we are faithless, he will remain faithful,15 for he cannot disown himself.
Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words;16 it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.1716
Avoid godless chatter,18 because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus19 and Philetus,
who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place,20 and they destroy the faith of some.21
