1PilatethentookJesus and a1scourged Him.
22And the soldierstwisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purplerobe on Him;
and they began to come up to Him and say, "3Hail, King of the Jews !" and to 4give Him slaps in the face.
4Pilate5came out again and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that 6I findnoguilt in Him."
5Jesusthencame out, 7wearing the crown of thorns and the purplerobe. Pilate said to them, "Behold, the Man !"
6Sowhen the chiefpriests and the 8officerssaw Him, they cried out saying, "Crucify, crucify !" Pilatesaid to them, "Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for 9I findnoguilt in Him."
The Jewsanswered him, "10We have a law, and by that law He ought to diebecause He 11madeHimself out to be the Son of God."
8ThereforewhenPilateheardthisstatement, he was even moreafraid ;
and he 12entered into the bPraetoriumagain and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But 13Jesusgave him noanswer.
10SoPilatesaid to Him, "You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I haveauthority to release You, and I haveauthority to crucify You?"
11Jesusanswered, "14You would havenoauthoritycover Me, unless it had beengiven you from above ; for thisreason15he who delivered Me to you has the greatersin."12
As a result of thisPilatedmadeefforts to release Him, but the Jewscried out saying, "16If you releasethisMan, you are nofriend of Caesar ; everyone who makeshimself out to be a kingeopposesCaesar."
13Therefore when Pilateheardthesewords, he broughtJesus out, and 17satdown on the judgmentseat at a placecalledfThe Pavement, but 18in gHebrew, Gabbatha.
14Now it was 19the day of preparation for the Passover ; it was about the h20sixthhour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, 21your King !"
15So they cried out, "22Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!" Pilatesaid to them, "Shall I crucify your King ?" The chiefpriestsanswered, "We havenoking but Caesar."
16So he then23handed Him over to them to be crucified.
1724They tookJesus, therefore, and He went out, i25bearing His owncross, to the place called26the Place of a Skull, which is called27in jHebrew, Golgotha.
18There they crucified Him, and with Him 28twoothermen, one on eitherside, and Jesus in between.
19Pilatealsowrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, "29JESUS THE NAZARENE, 30THE KING OF THE JEWS."
20Thereforemany of the Jewsreadthisinscription, for the placewhereJesus was crucified was near the city ; and it was written31in kHebrew, Latin and in Greek.
21So the chiefpriests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, '32The King of the Jews '; but that He said, 'I am33King of the Jews.' "
22Pilateanswered, "34What I have written I have written."
23Then35the soldiers, when they had crucifiedJesus, took His outergarments and made36fourparts, a part to everysoldier and also the ltunic ; now the tunic was seamless, wovenmin onepiece.
24So they said to oneanother, "37Let us not tear it, but castlots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; 38this was to fulfill the Scripture : "THEY 39DIVIDED MY OUTERGARMENTSAMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CASTnLOTS."
25Therefore the soldiersdidthesethings. 40But standing by the cross of Jesus were 41His mother, and His mother'ssister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and 42MaryMagdalene.
When Jesusthensaw His mother, and 43the disciplewhom He lovedstandingnearby, He said to His mother, "44Woman, behold, your son !"27Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother !" From that hour the discipletook her into 45his own household.
