he became angry1 with them. He sold them2 into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,
who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead,3 the land of the Amorites.
The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah,4 Benjamin and the house of Ephraim;5 and Israel was in great distress.
Then the Israelites cried6 out to the LORD, "We have sinned7 against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."811
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians,9 the Amorites,10 the Ammonites,11 the Philistines,1212
the Sidonians, the Amalekites13 and the Maonitesa14 oppressed you15 and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
But you have forsaken16 me and served other gods,17 so I will no longer save you.
Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save18 you when you are in trouble!19"
But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best,20 but please rescue us now."
Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD.21 And he could bear Israel's misery22 no longer.2317
When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.2418
The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head25 of all those living in Gilead."
